U.S. 106th Infantry Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It relieved the US 2nd Infantry Division in the Schnee Eifel on the 11th.
The German Ardennes Offensive was thrown in force at the 106th on 16 December.
The 422d and 423d Infantry Regiments were encircled and cut off from the remainder of the Division by a junction of enemy forces in the vicinity of Schonberg.

Lone Sentry: The 106th: The Story of the 106th Infantry Division -- WWII G.I. Stories Booklet
CT 112 was attached to the 106th Div., and with the 424th, held against German attacks south of St. Vith.
Facing the 106th was a division identified as one which had been in the attack on St. Vith.
The 106th now was not only at full strength, it had a surplus — a far cry from the dark final days of December when the 424th and a few attached units were the division's only force.

75th Infantry Division in Combat ~ Page 1
Ideally, a new division's introduction to combat should be a relatively easy one, but Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt's December offensive in the Ardennes presented such a threat to the Allied cause that the 75th Infantry Division was obliged to start combat with the toughest fight encountered in the whole war in the west.
The 289th Infantry was attached to Combat Command B of the 3d Armored Division, and was given the mission of seizing, organizing, and defending a frontage of approximately 10,000 yards in the very heavily wooded area running south and east from GRANDMENIL to EREZEE.
The 290th Infantry was held in division reserve; the 3d Battalion in northern sector, the 1st Battalion in the southern, sector, and the2d Battalion in the rear at BASSE BODEUX.

Actions in the Schnee Eiffel, the fate of the 106th Infantry Division
The 423d Infantry was in fact bearing the brunt of the enemy barrage and most of its telephone lines to the forward units went out in the first few minutes.
Within the hour messages from the 28th Division and the 99th Division told of heavy shelling to the south and the north of the 106th.
This new division would have no opportunity to reconnoiter the broken and heavily wooded ground over which it was to advance the next morning---a fact which had direct bearing on the subsequent story of the 424th Infantry---but its scheme of maneuver had been given detailed study.

A motor-driven railroad engine captured by the Division was carried to the narrow-gauge railroad that ran between Bamberg and Hausen and the six-car "train" had to be jacked over several bombedout stretches that were met en route to the marshalling yards of Forchheim, where a house-to-house battle netted the raiders twenty prisoners.
Although the entire 3d Division was committed in the siege, elements of the 15th Infantry were the first to enter the outer, or "new" city, shortly after noon of April 17, after Division troops had overrun at least fifty "88s" in the drive through the outskirts of the city on the previous night.
The 15th Infantry was rushed to that vicinity to reinforce and hold the bridgehead while the remainder of the Division stayed in Nurnberg on guard duty until relief by the 80th Infantry Division was effected.
