 United States States
The census classes the states of the United States into nine divisions, and at a still higher level, into four regions, which are groups of divisions.
The states which had seceded were re-admitted to the United States one by one, starting with Tennessee (1866-07-24) and ending with Georgia (1870-07-15).
The "United States of America" at that time referred to a loose confederation of thirteen states, plus unorganized territory to the west of the Applachian Mountains claimed by those states, often in competition.
