Celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week: Make Sure Refuges Actually Protect Animals
October 10-16 is National Wildlife Refuge Week, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which oversees the national refuge system, is celebrating the occasion by promoting—without a hint of irony—recreational hunting on refuge lands.
Because most people assume that a wildlife refuge is a safe haven for wildlife, it may come as a surprise to learn that recreational hunting and trapping are now allowed on more than 300 of the 544 refuges within the National Wildlife Refuge System.
Moreover, the USFWS is authorizing recreational hunting and trapping on more refuges every year, targeting wildlife species whether they are abundant or not, native or non-native, and regardless of a glaring lack of even basic demographic data on many of these wildlife populations.
