The highway was first given the '11' designation in 1958, and it originally followed South Fraser Way through Abbotsford, being re-routed onto the four-lane Sumas Way in the early 1980s.

My wife and I drove the Dalton Highway last summer (around 1 June 1999) over its entire length, and there are State Highway 11 signs on the road, but not many of them (not too many places to turn off of it, I guess).
Some of the funds sought were for improvements to the paved highway close to Fairbanks, but those roads are not part of Alaska 11, and are not really considered part of the Dalton Highway (usually considered to start around Livengood, where Alaska 11 meets Alaska 2).
Even though the highway is built over unstable permafrost, which creates frost heaves in pavement, plans call for the whole 414-mile long road to be paved.

Apparently the south end of US 11 was originally at the Louisiana state line south of Picayune MS.
Northbound US 11 follows the same corridor as I-81 through all of VA. Southbound US 11E goes to Johnson City TN, and southbound US 11W goes to Kingsport TN.
The north end of US 11 has always been in Rouses Point NY.
