Minor party and independent candidates are very occasionally elected, usually to local or state office, but the United States political system has historically supported catch all parties rather than coalition governments.
During the 19th century, many new states were added to the original thirteen as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions.
Following the European colonization of the Americas, the United States became the world's first modern democracy after its break with Great Britain, with a Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Michigan Highways: Highways 40 through 49
On the Official 1935 Michigan State Highway Department map, the portion of M-46 between Kent City and Cedar Springs (17 Mile Rd) is shown as not being a marked trunkline and the two portions of M-46 are not connected with each other.
In the 1920s and even into the 1930s, the State Highway Department had long-range plans to continue US-41 directly north of US-2 at Powers on new alignment through northern Menominee and southern Marquette Cos to the Gwinn area, then northerly via the present-day M-553 corridor into Marquette.
In fact, this "expressway" had originally been intended to be a full freeway, according to State Highway Department sources.

The US Interstate Highway System: 40 Year Report
It is not an exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact, that the interstate highway system is an engine that has driven 40 years of unprecedented prosperity and positioned the United States to remain the world's pre-eminent power into the 21st century.
Highway transportation, and directly related industries is 7.5 million, more than one-sixth of total employment, while personal expenditures on highway transport represent one-ninth of total personal expenditures.
The American Highway Users Alliance traces its roots to 1932, when it was chartered by General Motors President Alfred Sloan to "get the farmers out of the mud." The Highway Users (knows as the Highway Users Federation from 1970 to 1995) serves the long-term interests of business and industry in transportation.

 Michigan State Highways
The state highway system is undergoing some change at present, though, with the potential addition of hundreds (maybe thousands!) of miles of locally maintained roads to the system.
Many of these short spurs were removed from the state highway system by the late 1930s.
Otherwise, the state highway system is randomly numbered and three-digit routes are not spurs off through routes.

 U.S. 12 Michigan to Washington
Officials from cities left off a U.S. route or off a prominent route also lobbied their State highway officials to secure better placement on a "number" that was seen as providing economic opportunity.
All numbering requests (such as designation of routes, changes in existing numbered routes, or deletion of routes) were submitted by the State highway agencies to AASHO and its successor, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, for review and action.
