 Lost US 9W - Alpine, New Jersey
Then at one point (as you will soon see) the road to the overlook pulls away from the old US 9W and the old highway (still in its original concrete grade) is a pedestrian walkway.
It seems that the State Line Overlook on the Palisades Interstate Parkway took away part of US 9W between current PIP Exit 3 and the NJ-NY State Line.
Ahead you see is the old US 9W blocked off with the new entrance roadway to the left.

In 1970, the state of New York submitted a proposal to the Federal government to construct a 60.5-mile-long Interstate highway along the US 209 corridor from I-87 in Kingston southwest to I-84 in Port Jervis.
Both New York and New Jersey believed that recreation area proposed along the corridor would boost chances that the corridor would be designated as an Interstate However, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) rejected the proposal, and no Interstate designation was given for the corridor.

 Dunderberg Spiral Railway: History
The Hudson River Valley Atlas of 1891 shows that the highway was at that time on the water side of the railroad, and the base station is shown as an I-shaped building inside the DSR loop, which runs right alongside the West Shore railroad, where modern highway 9W is.
Despite the name, the part of the railroad used for the excursion service was relatively straight and was simply a "double-twisted figure 8", meaning the down track passed under the other line twice.
The cars there went up one inclined plane, coasted down a "back track", went up a second inclined plane, and coasted a short way again to the terminal, nine miles west of Mauch Chunk.

In 1935 the north end of US 209 was extended to its current terminus, which is a junction with US 9W in Kingston NY.
Below is a series of the signage for the north beginning of US 209 as seen from northbound US 9W.
The following year, the south end of US 209 was truncated to its current terminus in Millersburg PA. That makes it a member in a small group of inland US highways which don't end at a junction with another US route.
