Without debate, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee Wednesday approved a bill intended to improve unsafe and unsanitary conditions at the nation's 74 detention centers for American Indians.
To remedy the problem, the Senate bill would create a new Branch of Detention Services to oversee the prisons within the Bureau of Indian Affairs' Division of Law Enforcement.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs also would be required to keep records of all serious incidents within in the detention facilities.

 From War to Self-Determination: the Bureau of Indian Affairs
The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs introduced the measure a third time in the 22nd Congress, and it passed both houses to become law on July 9, 1821.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), also referred to, until 1947, as the Office of Indian Affairs and the Indian Office, is one of the oldest agencies within the U.S. government.
That part of the act of July 9, 1821 authorizing the appointment of the Commissioner was later amended by the act of 1849 that transferred the Office of Indian Affairs to the Department of the Interior.
