U.S. customary units - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
U.S. customary units, commonly known in the United States as English units or standard units, are units of measurement that are currently used in the U.S., in some cases alongside units from SI (the International System of Units—the modern metric system).
However, metrication in the United States has been less forcefully imposed than in other countries, and has encountered more resistance from industrial and consumer market forces, so customary units are still widely used on consumer products and in industrial manufacturing; only in military, medical and scientific contexts are SI units generally the norm.
U.S. survey measure uses an older definition of the units (specified by the former National Bureau of Standards in 1893) which the United States used prior to adopting international measure.

U.S. customary units - Simple English Wikipedia
U.S customary units are those used to measure things in the United States.
Common volume units are the teaspoon, tablespoon (3 teaspoons), fluid ounce (two tablespoons), cup (8 ounces), pint (2 cups, or 16 fluid ounces), quart (2 pints, or 32 fluid ounces), US gallon (16 cups, 128 fluid ounces, or 3.8 liters).
A barrel is the unit to measure oil.

 Imperial unit
The United Kingdom completed its legal transition to SI units in 1995, but a few such units are still in official use: for example, milk and beer may still be sold in pints, and most roadsigns are still in yards and miles.
In the United States these two are not the same, the gallon and its subdivisions are used in the measurement of liquids; the bushel, with its subdivisions, is used in the measurement of certain dry commodities.
Note that the British ton is 2240 pounds (known in the US as a "long ton"), which is very close to a metric tonne, whereas the ton generally used in the United States is the "short ton" of 2000 pounds (907 kg).

 Units: Customary Units
Because of their many eccentricities, English customary units clearly are more cumbersome to use than metric units in trade and in science.
Most area units were eventually defined to be the area of a square having sides equal to some simple multiple of a distance unit, like the square yard.
Meanwhile, all land in England was traditionally measured by the gyrd or rod, an old Saxon unit probably equal to 20 "natural feet." The Norman kings had no interest in changing the length of the rod, since the accuracy of deeds and other land records depended on that unit.

U.S. Customary Units and their Equivalents
The two most commonly used units of weight (or mass) measurement for cooking in the U.S. are the ounce and the pound.
Do not confuse the ounce of weight with the fluid ounce, because they are not the same; there is no standard conversion between weight and volume unless you know the density of the ingredient.
Liquid measurement is not only used for liquids such as water and milk, it is also used when measuring dry and other ingredients such as flour, sugar, shortening, butter, and spices.

Unit price computations may be less challenging since the metric system deals in decimals while U.S. customary units deal in odd multiples of 12, 16 or 36 units.
Sounds funny, but in today's world of a global marketplace, the old U.S. customary units are inching-- make that millimetering their way to metric designations.
"The inch-pound units are apparently a distraction," says Simila.

The Unified Code for Units of Measure
In short, each unit is defined relative to a system of base units by a numeric factor and a vector of exponents by which the base units contribute to the unit to be defined.
Fortunately these units are rather rare in everyday use in trade and medicine, however, we must urge everyone to regenerate their tables, dictionaries, and knowledge bases, and check their data immediately based on this corrected release of The Unified Code for Units of Measure.
The units directly affected by this error were: unified atomic mass unit (u), parsec (pc), Planck's constant [h], Boltzman's constant [k], electric permittivity ([eps_0]), elementary charge ([e]), electron mass ([m_e]), proton mass ([m_p]), Newton's constant of gravitation ([G]), Maxwell (Mx), Gauss (G), phot (ph), Curie (Ci), Roentgen (R), and U.S. and international mil ([mil_i], [mil_us]).

The metric system is much simpler to use than the existing English system since all its units of measurement are divisible by 10.

SI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since most non-SI units, such as the U.S. customary units, are nowadays defined in terms of SI units, any change in the definition of the SI units results in a change of the definition of the older units as well.
The swift worldwide adoption of the metric system as a tool of economy and everyday commerce was based mainly on the lack of customary systems in many countries to adequately describe some concepts, or as a result of an attempt to standardize the many regional variations in the customary system.
The International System of Units (abbreviated SI from the French language name Système International d'Unités) is the modern form of the metric system.

The presence of these adjustments has been one reason advocates of the U.S. customary units have used against metrication; these customary units, however, are nowadays defined in terms of SI units, thus any difference in the definition of the SI units results in a difference of the definition of the customary units.
