Handbook of Texas Online: SHERMAN COUNTY
The voters of Sherman County supported Democratic candidates in virtually every presidential election between 1892 and 1948, except in 1896, when Republican William McKinley narrowly carried the county, and in 1928, when Republican Herbert Hoover bested Democrat Al Smith.
The county's sympathies shifted in the 1950s, however, and Republican candidates carried the county in every presidential election between 1952 and 1992.
The area is drained by the North Fork of the Canadian River, which cuts across the northwestern corner of the county, and by Frisco, Coldwater, and North Palo Duro creeks.

 Facial hair and Presidential elections
The last man to win the Presidency with facial hair was William Howard Taft, Roosevelt's chosen successor as the Republican candidate in the 1908 election, whose moustache was rather more resplendent than Roosevelt's.
Every Republican candidate from 1856 to 1892 (with the arguable exception of 1860) had a beard, with a later run of moustaches on Roosevelt in 1904, Taft in 1908 and Roosevelt and Taft in 1912 followed by a final beard in 1916 (and a postscript for the moustache in 1944 and 1948).
This election is seen by many as the one that set the trend for the rest of the century, as Abraham Lincoln, famously bearded, defeated Stephen Douglas, incumbent Vice-President John Breckinridge, and John Bell, all of whom were clean shaven.
