Unmanned aerial vehicle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), also called a drone, is a self-descriptive term used by the US military, the Israeli Defence Forces and others to describe the latest generations of pilotless aircraft.
A weaponized UAV is known as an Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle, or UCAV for short.
The IMI Scout UAV System has played an important combat role both in the service of the Israeli Ground Forces and Israeli Air Force, during the Operation Peace for Galilee.

UAVs were also found to have their own vulnerabilities and limitations, which make many senior commanders loath to throw all their surveillance and reconnaissance "eggs into the UAV basket".
UAVs were not new to the southern Balkan theatre of operations, with USAF General Atomics RQ-1 Predators, flying from Hungary, being employed to support the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) verification mission in October and November of 1998.
UAVs did provide a major component in the allied reconnaissance effort but it has to be stressed they were part of a combined effort involving a variety of land, air and space based assets.

RQ-4 Global Hawk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RQ-4 Global Hawk is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used by the US Air Force as a surveillance aircraft.
The Global Hawk is the first UAV to be certified by the FAA to file its own flight plans and use civilian air corridors in the United States with no advance notice.
The Global Hawk UAV system comprises an air vehicle segment consisting of air vehicles with sensor payloads, avionics, and data links; a ground segment consisting of a Launch and Recovery Element (LRE), and a Mission Control Element (MCE) with embedded ground communications equipment; a support element; and trained personnel.

 UAVs
The new optimism about UAVs has two main drivers: one is technical, the development of lightweight composite structures, reliable digital flight control systems, miniaturised sensors and robust data links: the other political, the pressure on military commanders to avoid casualties.
UAVs do not risk pilots’ lives, and this consideration has provided a counterbalance to the built-in, anti-UAV prejudice that was particularly pervasive in pilot-dominated air staffs for so many years.
The conflict also underlined the lesson concerning UAV operations in the real world: that the processing and dissemination of the information they generate must be fully integrated with that provided by other platforms.

Cruise Missiles and Unmanned Air Vehicles
UAVs can be as large as a jetliner or as small as a model airplane, can be jet or propeller driven; there are even concepts for guided, unmanned blimps that would be UAVs.
As UAVs become more capable (as in the recent use of armed UAVs in Afghanistan), they are taking on more missions that have been exclusively the province of manned aircraft; this is expected to grow in the future, with the further development of so-called Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs).
Moreover, UAVs are potential delivery systems for weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and indeed are ideally suited for the delivery of chemical and biological weapons (CBW) given UAVs ability to disseminate aerosols in the right places at the right altitudes.

UAVs can extend the sight of battlefield commanders — both in a visual sense and using sensor data — without risking pilots' lives.
UAVs provide a "remote intelligence capability of the first order" by putting eyes on the target and feeding that information directly back to the commanders or even shooters, said Hillen, now senior vice president and director of American Management Systems Inc.'s defense and intelligence group.
He noted, however, that the use of UAVs requires the military services to be "forward-learning," calling for them to reorganize, shift their culture and mindset, and bring about a change in doctrine, training and education.
