 UAW Local 1999
UAW Local 1999 carries on in the proud UAW tradition of working to improve conditions in the community.
Essential to the UAW’s purpose is to afford the opportunity for workers to master their work environment; to achieve not only improvement in their economic status, but, of equal importance, to gain from their labors a greater measure of dignity, of self-fulfillment, and self-worth.
UAW Local 1999 members are those hourly employees of General Motors who, until it was closed, work at the Oklahoma City manufacturing plant.

US auto union prepares to hand over historic concessions
The UAW is an organization of the labor bureaucracy, which negotiates not on behalf of rank-and-file workers but for the stratum of corrupt and privileged officials who control the organization.
The UAW already set the precedent for this rollback in 2005, when it reopened the contract with GM and Ford and imposed $15 billion in healthcare costs on retired workers—ending full coverage for former workers for the first time since this benefit was won in 1964.
Once the UAW controls huge portions of GM and Ford stock (Chrysler is now a privately held company), the labor bureaucracy will have a direct economic incentive to continue to drive down the living standards of their members and increase the profits pumped out of workers in the factories.

If the International Union, UAW decides to fill the available Guild position from current employees, the selection of the employees to prevail in the bid shall be based on general competency, qualifications and ability to do the work assigned and the length of service of the employee.

 At What Cost? | UAW
The legislation opposed by the UAW increased the cap on the number of visas given, made it easier for visa holders to change jobs and was specifically targeted at universities and research institutions.
The bulk of the text on the national UAW website indicates that the motivation for opposing these visas is to protect American jobs from competition by immigrants and to give incentives for U.S. worker education, which are unsurprising and legitimate positions for an American union to take.
At one UAW sponsored NASCAR race, union leaders and their guests were flown to and from the race track by helicopter.

 UAW, Ford sign contract
The document also was signed by UAW Vice President Bob King, who heads the national Ford section of the union, and the automaker's executive chairman, Bill Ford Jr.
Ultimately, it was rival General Motors Corp. that the UAW chose as its strike target once the last contract expired Sept. 14.
As at GM and Chrysler, the centerpieces of that contract were an agreement to permanently transfer responsibility for hourly retiree health care from the automaker to a union-run trust fund, and a two-tier wage deal that will allow the manufacturer to pay new hires about half what current workers make.

In the late 80s-early 90s the UAW and a few other major unions briefly mounted what appeared to be a promising campaign for “single-payer” health care, modeled on the Canadian system.
