At the same CIAU championships, the western champion UBC Thunderbirds executed another first in that by defeating the Sherbrooke University team they were winners of the National Junior (under 21) championship.
UBC qualified for the nationals when it earlier won the western open title by defeating the top teams of Alberta, BC and Washington state.
The fact this UBC team was the first to initiate this metamorphosis and the resulting impact not only at UBC but provincially and nationally, has to rank as important as its victories on the court this season.

Former UBC chancellor Sherwood Lett (1951-1957) was the goaltender on the final McGill University College of British Columbia entry of 1914-1916 and existed primarily due to the initiative of one or two keen individuals.
The club phase of UBC hockey, although hampered by many obstacles such as a lack of campus facilities, uncertain leagues, war interruptions, and inadequate finances, did mange to win in a peak and long trough fashion a number of city championships and gain recognition as a major sport on campus.
UBC set out to meet this challenge and in the most recent phase of Thunderbird hockey history, it sought to hire coaches from outside of its academic Physical Education programme.

UBC football was experiencing very lean times, having gone winless the previous season and off to a very shaky start in 1974.
In 1976 the UBC Thunderbirds had reached the point where they were in a battle for first place relying on the arm of pre-season All-Canadian Dan Smith.
Although the Thunderbirds were not victorious, coach Frank Smith was selected the Canadian University Coach of the Year and his quarterback, Dan Smith, was a finalist in the balloting for Canada's outstanding player.

UBC won its third and fourth consecutive conference games with a two-game sweep of the visiting University of Regina Cougars as the Thunderbirds skated to 5-2 and 5-3 wins at the Thunderbird Winters Sports Centre on Friday-Saturday, January 21st-22nd.
The two victories gives UBC a 4-12-4 conference record and the Thunderbirds are now in third place in the conference’s Mountain Division and hold a six point advantage over the fourth place University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in the race for the final playoff position in the division.
Bartzen, who leads UBC in both conference and overall scoring, is tied for 11th place in the Canada West Hockey scoring race with 1-19-20 in 18 games and he is third in assists.

The last few minutes of the half saw UBC spend a good bit of time downfield only to be let down by poor handling and some poor decisions, which on two occasions allowed Burnaby to run the ball back over half the field to increase their lead.

UBC was up by as much as 10 points in the first half, but the Huskies battled back and brought the gap to three points, with the T-Birds leading 36-33 going into the second.

Bad news: UBC is now on the same side as #2 seed Stanford (looking almost as strong as Colorado, who've won two games by at least 7, but the third only squeaked by with a one-point win at the cap); meaning UBC meets them in the semis.
I don't think UBC played their final game(s), and it seems they ended up somewhere between tied for 13th with Pittsburgh, and tied for 15th with Queens.

UBC’s Jessica Deglau, who won her last CIS medal tonight, a silver in the 4 X 100 Medley Relay, ends her brilliant career with a total of 29 medals, the highest total in the history of the prestigious Thunderbirds program.
A member of the National Team since 1996, Deglau was chosen CIS Female Swimmer of the Year in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, and participated in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics.
