UC Davis medical students and faculty joined state and university leaders Wednesday to celebrate the groundbreaking for a $40 million education and library building at the heart of the UCD Medical Center campus in Sacramento.
Ortiz recalled when the medical center was the county hospital, and the old state fairgrounds covered much of the area.
Ortiz said she has been pleased with the way the medical center has revitalized the community, and she is excited about the latest project that will help train tomorrow's medical providers to care for the region's diverse population.

Wilkes said the 20 miles separating the medical school in Davis and the hospital in Sacramento limits the opportunities for students to interact in the clinical setting.
Though she will not be affected by the move, first-year medical student Whitney Smith said the new facility will help cut down on commute time and establish a greater sense of community since first- and second-year students are currently separated from the third- and fourth-year students.
UCD transformed a once-troubled hospital into what Vanderhoef describes as a "top-ranked academic medical center." Now the education aspect of the medical school will join it, which is the best thing to do, he said.

UC Davis police are seeking tips from the public in locating a trailer stolen from the UCD Medical Center in Sacramento.
According to a UCDMC news release, the training trailers were purchased by the medical center through a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety.
The office selected the UCD Trauma Prevention and Outreach Program to act as a clearinghouse for providing the trailers to different organizations throughout the state, such as hospitals, health departments and law enforcement agencies.

Robert Chason announced his retirement Tuesday as head of the UC Davis Medical Center, capping a tenure that saw significant new construction but cutbacks and layoffs as well.
On his watch, the 530-bed hospital, which has an annual operating budget of $816 million, has undertaken a number of construction projects, including a $200 million-plus surgical and emergency services pavilion that's due to be completed in about a year and a half.

Student Comments:"My main duty at the Child Protection Center was filing colposcope photos of normal and abused children; colposcope photos are basically really enlarged photos of genitalia, so this is not an internship for someone who cannot handle seeing graphic evidence of abuse.
However, my duties were not limited to filing photos, and changed in accordance with what needed to be done in the office, from working with the child psychologists to helping out at the reception desk.
So many of the children have to go through invasive testing to threat their disorders, that I try to reduced their fears of at least some of the procedures they must go through namely the taking of vital signs.
