As Major League Baseball starts its season with rivalry games between the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Dodgers and the Giants, the USC baseball team takes on its rival, the UCLA Bruins, at Dedeaux Field this weekend.
However, USC may have a home-field advantage, having won 11 of the last 12 rivalry games played at Dedeaux Field.
As the Trojans and Bruins get set to renew their rivalry tonight, Los Angeles' two Pacific-10 Conference schools appear to be heading in different directions.

I love the ‘Iron Bowl.’ But at that same time, the Trojans of USC play the Bruins of UCLA in what I like to think of as the ‘Juicy Fruit Bowl.’ Being a nor-easterner, anything related to Southern California is viewed with disbelief, boredom, or scorn.
This one is a classic: the kids at State think of the Oregon team as a bunch of imported rich kid hippies and call the school the University of Cal. at Eugene, while the Oregon guys consider the State crew a bunch of illiterate car-thieves and thugs.
In these times of war and strife, it’s good to know that no matter how close one school is to another racially, politically, and socio-economically, it’s still cool to want to bust your neighbor in the face.

USC's cross-town rival UCLA traditionally vandalizes Tommy Trojan (often by painting him blue and gold) during the week of the annual USC-UCLA football game, but the university has begun covering him with copious amounts of duct tape during that week so that he is protected from the UCLA pranksters.
The Trojan Shrine was sculpted by Roger Noble Burnham and modeled based on a variety of USC football players, including Russel Saunders, Ernie Pinckert, Henry Becker and John Ward.
While the white horse named Traveler is USC's official mascot, many people have come to identify Tommy Trojan as the symbol of the university.

If the seventh-ranked Bruins (8-2, 6-1 Pac-10) beat USC (6-4, 4-3) today, and Washington State loses to Washington, UCLA is assured of at least a tie with Arizona State for the conference championship, and the Bruins would go to the Rose Bowl.

The Victory Bell, which formerly adorned a Southern Pacific Railroad Car, is given to the winner of the annual UCLA vs. USC football game.
According to the 1961 UCLA Alumni Magazine, the incident sparking this rivalry occurred in 1939, when the Student Alumni Association gave students a 295-pound bell excavated from a Southern Pacific Railroad car as a present.
This happened until 1941, when scheming fraternity brothers from USC drove away with the bell as it was being loaded into a truck.

You can't give USC so much credit for barely winning a rivalry game against a bad team and say OU is weak for barely beating their rivals in away games against all ranked teams.
USC is a good team, and remains undefeated, but when ranked teams average 350 passing yards against Notre Dame, Matt Leinart's passing for 400 yards and 4 TDs isn't as spectacular as simply looking at the numbers would suggest.
USC deserves the credit for beating a team as good as Oklahoma, even if it was mainly due to the fact that OU self-destructed.

Gregg Fonarow, director of the Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, which oversees the UCLA Clinical Heart Failure Program, said Cedars' new effort is no surprise given the rivalry between the two Westside hospitals.
While six area facilities perform heart transplants, industry officials say Cedars clearly seeks a bigger share of the market, which is currently dominated by nearby UCLA Medical Center.

The game was a showcase of two of the top players in the country, as UCLA quarterback Gary Beban would go on to win the Heisman Trophy a month after the game, while USC tailback O.J. Simpson would win the prestigious award in 1968.
Yet in 1967, it was Simpson's Trojans who would out duel Beban's Bruins in what is often referred to as the best game ever in the crosstown rivalry.
A relatively pedestrian game until the final quarter, UCLA took the lead when Beban threw a touchdown pass to put the Bruins up, 20-14, with about 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

USC beats UCLA in 'Blood Bowl'
Because blood supplies are typically low during the football and holiday seasons, both sides agreed to start a new rivalry, where the winner is not determined by how many touchdowns and last year field goals made, but how much blood is donated by fans to local blood banks.
The Blood Bowl was especially beneficial because Los Angeles has the lowest rate of blood donation in the country.
The situation this fall caused the Red Cross to withhold Type-O blood unless for trauma or emergency situations and forced 60 percent of transfused blood to be imported to the region from other areas.
