UCSB Linguistics was created to realize a vision of linguistics as a field that would seek explanations for language through an understanding of how it is used by speakers as a fundamental human activity.
From the beginning, the department committed itself to maintaining a sharp focus on the theoretical and methodological tools that would be needed to realize this vision, and to developing a broad empirical base for the work via a typologically diverse sampling of the world’s languages.
With its focus on analyzing patterns of linguistic structure, identifying patterns of language use, and theorizing the connections between them, over the last two decades UCSB has developed ideas and methods that are critical for moving the field of linguistics into a new era.

 UCSB Department of English
In summer 2005, the Transliteracies Project for research in the technological, social, and cultural practices of online reading was granted status as a University of California Multi-Campus Research Group (MRG) for 2005-2010, with total funding of $175,000 from the UC system and another $175,000 in cost sharing from UC Santa Barbara.
Headquartered in the UCSB English Department, the project is directed by UCSB Professor Alan Liu and includes scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and engineering from throughout the University of California system.
Funded by UCSB Instructional Improvement grants, a team of graduate students supervised by the Department's Transcriptions Project has worked since summer 2003 to create the new English Department Knowledge Base.

 UCSB Press Release: "UCSB Astrophysicist Has Theory Supported by NASA Observations"
Lars Bildsten, a UCSB physics professor and permanent member of UCSB's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP), first developed a theory, published in 1998, which explains how neutron stars, the spinning compact remains of an exploded star, can only spin so fast due to the sudden onset of the emission of gravitational waves.
The first opportunity for such a test is about six years away, when the advanced version of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) in Hanford, Wash. and Livingston, La. will be "tuned in" to the neutron stars as they emit gravitational waves.
Bildsten joined the faculty of the UCSB Physics Department and became a permanent member of the KITP in July 1999.

The UCSB International Capture The Flag (also known as the iCTF) is a distributed, wide-area security exercise, whose goal is to test the security skills of the participants from both the attack and defense viewpoints.
The UCSB CTF evolved from a number of previous security "live exercises" that were carried out locally at UCSB.
The contest included teams from UCSB, North Carolina State University, the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, the West Point Academy, Georgia Tech, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Nakamura is known for his technological wizardry with semiconducting gallium nitrides and is widely recognized as the world pioneer in light emitters based on the wide-bandgap semiconductor gallium nitride (GaN) and its alloys with aluminum and indium.
Before joining the UCSB faculty, Nakamura had worked in research for Japan's Nichia Chemical.
While at the company in the early 1990s, he single-handedly initiated the development of novel vapor-phase epitaxial growth techniques to obtain single-crystal GaN heteroepitaxial thin films with excellent structural and electrical properties.

 UCSB Cycling
The UCSB Mountain Bike team got off to a great start with the return of many of the riders from the 2005 season, plus the addition of some new talent.
With Cal Poly SLO's Parkfield, the first race, happening the weekend after the start of classes, UCSB nonetheless made a strong showing, with Martinez, Miller, Cerf, Stein, Judge, Johansen, Sadaghiani, Post, Fellers and Stuart racing.
The Cross Country race went especially well for the team, with Fellers coming in first in the Men's B category, Martinez coming in eighth in the Men's A category.
