The source to the Terak version of UCSD Pascal and P-System version I.3 (August 1977) was uploaded to CompuServe's PDP-11 Forum in July 1984 by one of the earlier UCSD licensees, Eli Willner of Pecan Software, and remains there to this day - certainly one of the oldest files still on CompuServe.
The UCSD P-System was developed at the Institute for Information Studies at the University of California - San Diego, under the direction of Kenneth Bowles.

The colorful oval shell of the red abalone is highly prized as a source of nacre, or mother-of-pearl, jewelry, but the UCSD researchers are most impressed by the shell’s ability to absorb heavy blows without breaking.
Other biomimetic projects at UCSD include development of a new artificial limb technology that relies on bars and wires, new drug synthesis techniques invented to duplicate those of microorganisms, and “epidemiology-based” techniques designed to detect and defend against viruses, worms and other plagues afflicting the Internet.
They gently pushed back a section of the mantle from the shell of individual abalones, glued 15 millimeter glass slides to the shell, and later withdrew the slides at various time intervals and examined the growth of “flat pearl” with a transmission electron microscope.

Exactly four years after his death, a young doctor at the UCSD School of Medicine began seeing patients as part of her fellowship, the result of a gift from a charity established by David’s mother, Catherine Campbell.

The encoding that takes place in these particles provides colors that are so sharp from the visible to the infrared that a laser can read thousands of distinct colors corresponding to separate chemicals.
In this way, the UCSD researchers say these coded particles can perform thousands of biochemical assays in a small beaker or a Petri dish, which should be useful in many medical and research applications, such as the discovery of new drugs, the diagnosis of disease and the controlled release of therapeutic drugs.
