UConn scientists are adapting a machine used by the U.S. Coast Guard to find explosives and trace amounts of drugs for use in detecting Listeria and other pathogenic bacteria in meat before it is shipped to grocery stores and restaurants.
In the UConn Health Center's high-tech newborn intensive care unit, where premature babies are nurtured toward health by increasing their capacity to gain weight, simply having a mother hold her baby skin-to-skin, chest-to-chest has shown to have an immediate and long-term positive effect toward improving the baby's progress to good health.
Engler, a nurse, is conducting his research at the UConn Health Center, where he monitors the temperature and skin responses of mothers and fathers holding their premature babies in order to gauge the parents' reactions and level of stress.

The UConn cytogenetics program is one of only eight in North America and one of two in New England, according to the Association of Genetic Technologists.
UConn and Yale were the only Connecticut schools included out of more than 1,200 business schools nationwide, and UConn was the only public business school in New England to be ranked.
This is the first time UConn's School of Business has been ranked among the best in the nation and reflects the upward trajectory of the School during the past few years.

UConn has won four BIG EAST Regular Season Championships (1990, 1994, 1995, 1996), made appearances in six of the past seven NCAA Championships (including five trips to the Sweet 16 round and two berths in the Final Eight), and posted a league-leading 13 NCAA victories.
UConn was the No. 2 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Championship and rolled past Tennessee- Chattanooga (100-71) and Cincinnati (96-91) to advance to the NCAA "Sweet 16" for the fourth time in the past six years.
UConn was the No. 1 seed in the Southeast Region of the 1996 NCAA Championship and the Huskies advanced to the "Sweet 16" for the fifth time in the past seven years, beating Colgate and Eastern Michigan before bowing to Mississippi State.

UConn's other key to victory was the significant contribution they got from their bench players.
The ability of UConn's bench to outplay Duke's and put in quality minutes not only gave their starters a chance to rest, but they ate up fouls and kept UConn close long enough for them to grab the lead in the second half while Duke's starters were still fatigued.
In the final seconds, with UConn up by three, Trajan Langdon drove the length of the floor in a final attempt to tie the game, but he lost the dribble before a shot could even be attempted.

The UConn football team will open its 2005 BIG EAST Conference slate on Friday night against Syracuse at a sold out (as always) Rentschler Field.
It is the first such honors for Butler and Caulley while Bonislawski was also named to the Honor Roll for his performance in UConn’s win over Liberty on Sept. 10.

UCONN-BBALL is owned and maintained by Brett Rabideau of Periwinkle Communications, a graduate of the University of Connecticut and a major fan of both the men's and women's teams.
The list here at Periwinkle Communications orginally encompassed discussion of both the men's and women's teams, and was created in February 1995 while the UCONN women were in the middle of their undefeated Dream Season, and the men were just about to rise to #1 in the AP Poll.
In late January, 2001, the The women's discussion was split into its own list, UCONN-WBB, when it became apparent that the women's team would go on to the NCAA tounament, but the men's team would not.

When I first attended UConn in 1977 they caught the UConn basketball bug and were huge fans until they passed away in 1999 (thankfully, both of them lived to see UConn win the National Championship).
I attended UConn from Fall '77 through Fall '78 (I lived in Towers in Kingston, Room 305 for 2 semesters and then Room 405 for one semester after the dorm went co-ed), and again as a commuting student in Spring '83 and Spring '90 (but I eventually earned my degree elsewhere).
During my time at UConn from '77-78 I was a passive fan of the UConn men's basketball team, but not a real big fan.
