 UDDI 101 | UDDI
UDDI is advanced by the OASIS UDDI Specification Technical Committee.
UDDI includes a specific definition of the hierarchical relationship between a single instance of a UDDI implementation and others to which it is related.
The UDDI specification divides these functions into “Node API Sets” that are supported by a UDDI server and “Client API Sets” that are supported (naturally enough) by a UDDI client.

 Understanding UDDI
As shown in Figure 1, UDDI fits into an overall Web services stack and is a key component of its foundation, enabling the creation, specification, discovery, and invocation of Web services.
The UDDI Specification and the UDDI Business Registry, which provides a set of reference implementations that interoperate to share registrations, enable a programming model that supports either design-time or run-time service discovery, depending on the needs of the client.
UDDI Version 1 only supported a file-based replication scheme whose complexity grew as n-squared with the number of registry node implementations participating within a UDDI registry.

  WSDL and UDDI
UDDI is a platform-independent framework for describing services, discovering businesses, and integrating business services by using the Internet.
Before UDDI, there was no Internet standard for businesses to reach their customers and partners with information about their products and services.
UDDI is a cross-industry effort driven by all major platform and software providers like Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Hitachi, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, and Sun, as well as a large community of marketplace operators, and e-business leaders.

UDDI definitions are general enough to accomodate services of different kinds, which are not necessarily SOAP services.
UDDI, being a registry, is typically implemented using a database of sorts.

Web Service Description and Discovery Using UDDI, Part I   (Site not responding. Last check: )
UDDI is a public registry designed to house information about businesses and their services in a structured way.
The UDDI data is hosted by operator nodes, companies that have committed to running a public node that conforms to the specification governed by the UDDI.org consortium.
Both WSDL and UDDI were designed to clearly delineate between abstract meta-data and concrete implementations, and understanding the implications of the division is essential to understanding WSDL and UDDI.

UDDI is a single conceptual registry distributed among many nodes that replicate the participating businesses' data with one another.
Prior to the UDDI project, no industry-wide approach was available for businesses to reach their customers and partners with information about their products and web services.
The UDDI XML API schema is not contained in a specification; rather, it is stored as an XML Schema document that defines the structure and datatypes of the UDDI data structures.

When two or more UDDI "nodes" are integrated into a UDDI "registry," the use of the UDDI Replication API allows the registry to be viewed as a single logical entity.
In UDDI Services, the pattern holds true, but you would use http://[server name]/uddi or http://[server name]/uddipublic as the root, depending on whether you were using Windows authentication or not.

Registering and Discovering RSS Feeds in UDDI
UDDI has a flexible classification system that can be employed to attribute those feeds with a range of different metadata in an extensible way.
Each of these taxonomies is checked: when publishing a UDDI entry that attempts to use a value from one of these taxonomies, the operating UDDI node will perform validation on that value to insure the value is valid within the taxonomy.
UDDI was designed to support multiple classification systems so that as new and alternative taxonomies emerge, they can be incorporated into UDDI.

XML Reference Guide > UDDI   (Site not responding. Last check: )
UDDI is a protocol and structure that enables business owners to register themselves, their companies, and their available services so that potential users can find them.
For services, a UDDI registry includes a "technical model", also known as a tModel, which points to information a designer needs in order to build a client to access the service, as well as a separate "instance info" item, which might include information such as a WSDL file.
A UDDI registry is useful because it enables users to find a service based on the company, the industry, or the type of service being offered.

The notion of a private or non-operator UDDI node is critical to the emergence of a dynamic style of a service-oriented architecture.
The UDDI operator cloud is a collection of UDDI nodes coordinated by an operator's agreement to provide uniform access to Web services metadata from any of the operator nodes.
This private UDDI node is hosted by an e-marketplace, a standards body, or a consortium of organizations that participate and compete in the industry.

What's New in Enterprise UDDI Services
UDDI Services stores both the technical information to build an application compatible with a Web services interface, as well as the information required to successfully bind to that interface at runtime.
UDDI Services supports programmatic inquiries through the UDDI API and also includes a Web interface with searching, publishing, and coordination features that are compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later and Netscape Navigator 4.5 or later.
UDDI Services supports versions 1.0 and 2.0 of the UDDI Programmer's API, enabling enterprise developers to publish, discover, share, and interact with Web services directly through their development tools and business applications.

UDDI Publishing with C# > UDDI APIs   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In a nutshell, UDDI is a registry in which business entities, the services they offer, and the interfaces (tModels) for those services can be registered by potential service providers.
Functionally, a UDDI registry can be thought of as directory in which "white pages" contain the business contact information and "yellow pages" contain the categorized information about services offered by various businesses.
The UDDI specification, released by the UDDI.org council and later by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), describes how to interact with a UDDI registry using XML documents.

UDDI provides typed metadata through several means: First, three of the four central entities in UDDI (providers, services and tModels) can be adorned with what might be thought of as property bags: collections of typed name/value pairs that describe that given entity.
Classification and typed metadata is key to the ability of UDDI to solve the problems of reification of data both in the enterprise and in the public sphere.

The Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) Registry serves as a central location for publishing or acquiring information about various businesses, the services that they provide, and any technical interfaces they may use.
UDDI4Py allows access to the UDDI Registry by abstracting the underlying XML constructs and by the transmission/processing of the various SOAP API messages.

One idea that comes to mind is the ability to allow UDDI to be the host for all of a specific services' end points, which a central server (head office) could query in order to get this list and then hit each service.

This is in keeping with the emphasis of SOAs (service-oriented architectures) on supporting a variety of infrastructural variations and providing a means to define relationships among UDDI registries, according to OASIS.
"UDDI continues to serve an important role in the deployment of SOAs", said Karla Norsworthy, vice president of software standards at IBM, in a prepared statement released by OASIS.
The security enhancements in UDDI combined with the enterprise capabilities in WebSphere will be especially important for customers using UDDI to improve reuse and simplify discovery of Web services across their IT infrastructure."
