In 2004, UFCW Canada and the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) signed a formal organizing protocol recognizing the UFCW as the union with primary jurisdiction for organizing agricultural workers in Canada and agreeing to cooperate on joint organizing and advocacy campaigns.
UFCW employees have undertaken a variety of grassroots and web-based efforts to reform the UFCW and challenge allegedly corrupt or undemocratic practices.
The UFCW Members for Democracy (MFD) were founded in 1997 as a grassroots slate challenging the leadership of UFCW Local 1518 in British Columbia, Canada.

UFCW BARGAINING IN From the makeup of the UFCW membership, it is clear that the UFCW represents workers who desperately need a strong union, one that provides aggressive representation at the bargaining table, the work place, on the picketline and within the union itself.
Because UFCW is an undemocratic, top down union and the leadership, especially the International Union leadership, is not accountable to the membership, the largest percent of UFCW’s slightly more than 1.3 million members have taken an economic bloodbath at the bargaining table.
UFCW’s general collaborationist approach with employers, and their willingness to put membership growth and dues over a fight for good contracts, are major problems for UFCW negotiators.

According to UFCW Canada national director Wayne Hanley, “we’re glad the government finally acted to end its discrimination against workers who perform some of the most dangerous work there is. As we said in our legal challenge, the exclusion of these workers from OHSA protection was unfair, unjust and a violation of their Charter rights.”
For a decade UFCW Canada has led the campaign for safer, more just working conditions for farm workers, including the right to form unions for collective bargaining.
Last year, in the wake of an ongoing UFCW Canada legal challenge on behalf of these workers, the McGuinty government finally relented and announced it would extend OHSA coverage to agricultural workers commencing June 30th.
