  Little UFS2 FAQ
UFS2 is an extension to the well-known UFS.
UFS2 uses the same basic technologies as modern UFS1 (inodes, linear directory layout, soft updates, snapshotting, background file system checking, etc) so it was a relatively low-risk change.
As of 2003/04/02 UFS2 is not (yet) the default type for FFS filesystems.

Unix File System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
FreeBSD extended the FFS and UFS layers to support a new variant, called UFS2, which adds 64-bit block pointers (allowing volumes larger than 1TB), variable-sized blocks (similar to extents), extended flag fields and extended attribute support.
Linux includes a UFS implementation for binary compatibility at the read level with other Unixes, but since there is no standard implementation for the vendor extensions to UFS, Linux does not have full support for writing to UFS.
Note that the distinction this draws between FFS and UFS is wrong; both terms are used at present and have been used in the past.

Little UFS2 FAQ (2003/04/25, v15.a)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
UFS2 was developed by Kirk McKusick and Poul-Henning Kamp, but is based in large part on the existing UFS1 file system, which had a host of contributors.
UFS2 development was sponsored by DARPA and Network Associates Laboratories, and motivated by the requirements of the TrustedBSD Project.
UFS2 was ported to NetBSD by Frank van der Linden, sponsored by Wasabi Systems.

UFS2 provides native support for extended -attributes, larger disk sizes, and forward compatibility with new -on-disk high performance directory layout and storage extents.
Also, UFS2 is not currently recommended as a root -file system format for non-64-bit platforms due to increased size -of the boot loader; special local configuration is required to boot -UFS2 as a root file system on i386 and PC98.
UFS2 is the recommended file system, but +if disks are to be used on older FreeBSD systems, UFS1 improves +portability.

McKuick: Enhancements to the Fast Filesystem To Support Multi-Terabyte Storage Systems
On a typical UFS2 filesystem with 16 kilobyte blocks and 2 kilobyte fragments, the data-block map requires 64 megabytes of memory per terabyte of filesystem.
Because UFS2 does not preallocate inodes, but rather allocates the inodes as they are needed, the memory required is dependent on the number of files that are created in the filesystem.
The purpose of UFS2 was not to try and improve on the performance of UFS1 which is already within 80-95% of the bandwidth of the disk.

As UFS1 was the default, I'm sure many have installed 5 believing without a second thought that UFS2 would be used on all of their filesystems.
However, UFS2 was designed with ACLs and extended attributes in mind while this support for UFS1 was somehow bolted on as an afterthought.
The main performance gains of UFS2 will be for those that use ACLs (and extended attributes).

 Hardening the FreeBSD UFS2 Filesystem
Those of us who dabble in stress testing have also learned the hard way that running a background fsck is not always a good idea.
By using a small test program, a modified version of newfs(8), a few kernel modifications and some small test scripts I will try to prove that the bad_dir panics are caused by mounting an unclean filesystem and that the UFS2 filesystem code does not handle this gracefully.
It seems that the UFS2 filesystem code is not robust enough to handle mounting of unclean filesystems, so in order to run background fsck successfully these problems should probably be addressed.

 Large data storage in FreeBSD
The UFS2 filesystem was introduced in 2003 as a replacement to the original UFS and provides 64 bit counters and offsets.
This allows for files and filesystems to grow to 2^73 bytes (2^64 * 512) in size and hopefully be sufficient for quite a long time.
UFS2 largely solved the storage size limits imposed by the filesystem.

LWN: What's New in FreeBSD 5.3
Compared to UFS in FreeBSD 4, UFS2 provides several useful features, such as extended file attributes and support for larger file sizes - at the expense of lost compatibility with UFS.
FreeBSD 4 does not understand UFS2 and it is not possible to convert between the two file systems (as one would between ext2 and ext3 in Linux).
However, the upgrade process will probably be a lot more complex than a re-install, with a further functionality loss due to unavailability of UFS2 features in the upgraded system.

This results in the ufs2 stage1.5 loader being too large to fit in the hidden boot area of a ufs2 filesystem, so the test fails.
The simplest fix is to get --disable-ufs2 to actually work, but you are right, that is an upstream issue.
