UHF (1989) - A Review by David Nusair
UHF was released in 1989, and I was a total "Weird Al" Yankovic fanatic at the time (still am, actually; just not quite to the obsessive degree that I was then).
The film, written by Yankovic and director Jay Levey, is chock full of the parodies that made Yankovic famous, but there's also a decent (not to mention involving) story here.
While the majority of the film is devoted to wacky parodies, the underlying storyline follows George's dogged determination to see his station succeed and desperate attempts in winning back the love of his life (Victoria Jackson).

 UHF (1989)
UHF, which was partially written by Weird Al tells the tale of George Newman (of course played by Weird Al) as young man who goes from one dead end job to another and seems to have a rather difficult time keeping his over active imagination in check.
UHF is presented on a double-sided disc sporting both a full frame 4:3 version as well as the original theatrical 1.85:1 version.
UHF has the reputation of being somewhat of a cult favorite and surprisingly the film still holds up rather well - despite having a lot of pop culture references to the music and films of the 80’s.

 DVD Review: UHF
The film is certainly one of those comedies where the filmmakers have attempted to thrown everything great and small at the audience, hoping it will go over well.
Although I have to say that I felt the film rarely reached the heights of the "Indiana Jones" parody opening, most of the humor is still sharply funny and clever.
Final Thoughts: Admittedly, the wackiness of "UHF" isn't going to be everyone's comedic cup-of-tea, but for fans of the film (or people who enjoy the style of "Naked Gun"/Zucker Brothers style of humor), MGM has produced a terrific DVD edition, offering a pretty decent presentation and lots of enjoyable and amusing supplements.

UHF (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
UHF (also known as The Vidiot from UHF in Australia and parts of Europe, and Los Telelocos in Mexico) is a comedy film made in 1989.
In the film, Yankovic plays George Newman, a "daydreaming loser" (to quote IMDb's plot summary), whose uncle wins a faltering UHF television station (Channel 62) in a poker game and reluctantly puts George in charge, along with his friend Bob (Bowe).
According to Yankovic on the UHF DVD commentary track, the two scenes that earned the movie a PG-13 rating from the MPAA are the scene with poodles being thrown out the window, and the scene where Joe Earley (played by Emo Philips) accidentally cuts his thumb off with a table saw.

For example, there is a janitor throughout the film obsessed with being reunited with his beloved broom, as well as driving around in a little yellow car in front of numerous screaming children.
UHF was no doubt given the green light on the back of commercial Hollywood successes, as a means of making money by showing audiences how those successes could be turned into comedy: yet in most respects, that doesn’t succeed.
By that I mean the way the film is made, the way the humour (when it comes, rarely) is presented, and how the overall feel of the film is just like a bunch of half-arsed sketched strung together to ride the wake of other films’ success.

And instead of doing what they should have done, and releasing the film in the quiet spring or fall when it isn't facing any competition, they decide UHF is their tentpole summer release.
UHF was released just in time to compete with such small, quiet, surprise successes as Batman, Ghostbusters II, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Lethal Weapon 2, Dead Poet's Society, Star Trek V… you get the picture.
The film mostly ages well, though there are some things a younger audience (say, under 20) just won't get -- like the basic concept, since the old-school UHF programming parodied all but vanished a few years after the theatrical release.

Every week, video companies release more films from their vaults that are critically acclaimed and loved by the masses.
Essentially, UHF is a vehicle for the God of Musical Parody, 'Weird' Al Yankovic, probably intended to promote him as a movie funnyman a la Leslie Nielsen.
I recommend watching the film in half-hour increments, pausing for a few moments to cleanse the palate, so to speak.

UHF is all this to me. Even if this movie were nothing but the *commercial* parodies alone, it would be fully worth the price of admission (whether it's saying "I love you with the gift of a spatula" or seeing the results of a shoddy cemetary, they're some of the best bits in this film).

If anything, the film is just a live action cartoon in all aspects, but a funny cartoon at that.
But because the film is so lighthearted, even Fletcher and his associates are funny because of their whole "bad guy" persona is so overboard.
