Medical school - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A medical school, or faculty of medicine, is a tertiary educational institution, or part of such an institution, which is involved in the education of future medical practitioners (medical doctors).
However, not all medical schools in Canada necessarily require a bachelor's degree for entry, for example McGill University's medical school accepts applicants after a two-year CEGEP diploma, which is the equivalent of other provinces' grade 12 plus one year of university studies after grade 12.
In Japan, a medical school is a faculty of a university.

Nearly two thirds of medical students come from the highest social classes, and white and Asian students are more than twice as likely as fl students to be accepted once they have applied for a place at university to become a doctor, according to a damning report by the British Medical Association (BMA).
Six out of 10 (59%) medical school applicants come from the highest social classes, meaning their parents are in professions such as medicine, law or accountancy.
Dr Peter Dangerfield, chairman of the BMA's board of medical education said: "The NHS needs doctors who can relate to all their patients, but at the moment the profession is far from being representative of the public it serves.

Study reveals 'hidden' curriculum of humiliation in medical school
Researchers interviewed 36 students at one UK medical school about their experiences and perceptions of the quality of teaching received during their undergraduate training.
Although this study relies on interview accounts rather than observation of actual teaching and the data were collected from only one medical school, the reports suggest a worrying lack of accountability of medical teachers in overstretched clinical settings, say the authors.
Medical education has largely escaped from the quality control rigours imposed on clinical practice.

A medical school is coming under fire from would-be doctors who claim they were turned down for places at random.
Rejected applicants to the graduate entry scheme at Barts and The London medical school say they are angry they were turned down not through any lack of qualification or experience but because their "numbers did not come up".
The medical school says the three-stage process of selection had a random element which was necessary because the course was so over-subscribed.

BBC - h2g2 - The Charing Cross Hospital and Medical School, London, UK
Likewise, St Mary's Hospital and Medical School (which is still in Paddington), hated both the Westminster and The Cross - and both returned the favour in kind.
A further irony is that, despite the trimurviate of medical schools all hating each other, they have a shared hatred of what has been described by some lecturers as 'that lavatorial block south of the river' - St Thomas', the alma mater of the founder of The Cross.
Then, the medical degree was divided into a clear pre-clinical course; where during the first three years, medical students would study natural sciences, and then a clinical course, where with little or no previous patient contact, the students were let loose on the wards to be tormented by the ward sisters and consultants alike.

BMA report calls for action as low numbers of state school students enter medical school, UK   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The extra funding English medical schools will receive from top-up fees should be used to widen access to the profession, the BMA says today (Thursday 22 September, 2005) as new figures show that the proportion of medical students from state schools is far lower than the national average.
It argues that medical schools, which are all expected to charge students in England the full £3000 a year to study medicine, should invest the extra money to improve the quality of teaching and resources, and on outreach schemes to encourage applications from students who might not traditionally consider a career in medicine.
The report was authored by Jonathan Beavers, a medical student at the University of Edinburgh, Leigh Bissett at the University of East Anglia, David Burke at the University of Nottingham, and Emily Rigby at the University of Bristol.

Massive disparities in medical school admission by social class, UK
There are massive disparities in medical school admissions by social class, mainly because pupils from working class backgrounds see medical school as distant, unreal, and culturally alien, according to two studies in this week's BMJ (British Medical Journal).
In the first study, researchers used data on UK medical school admissions from 1996 to 2000 to calculate the proportion of admissions from various subgroups of the population (standardised admission ratios).
Equal representation at medical school across all social and ethnic subgroups is probably an inappropriate goal, but the findings of this study suggest that many able and ambitious pupils from poor backgrounds are not achieving their potential.

It is very difficult to be exact, but I have estimated that up to 50% of those Christians who started medical school in the years around me had given up on their faith entirely by the junior doctor ranks, and perhaps three out of four were much less keen as Christians.
We face numerous life crises including transition from school to university life, from university-style studies to 'life on the wards' and finally that overnight transformation in becoming a junior doctor.[3] At each stage a young Christian either leans on God with his faith or develops other coping mechanisms which may deflect him from God.
As one of the latter, I can now say that Christians such as myself who have 'survived' medical school would only be too delighted to offer a listening ear, perhaps inviting you to their home for an evening away from the books.

One of the major advantages is not having to take on an extra year to complete an intercalated degree--this means, however, that a lot of work is crammed into the first two years in order to fit it in.
Unfortunately, the choice of subject for the degree is limited to medical science, so if you want to do an intercalated degree in journalism or history of medicine, for example, you must wait until later in the course or try another medical school.
