UK classical chart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The UK classical chart is a commercial monitoring and marketing device used by the UK music industry to measure its effectiveness in promoting and selling CDs, nominally in the field of classical music.
The measurements are made by collating the returns of sales from a number of well known music stores on a regular basis, and this enables a ranking to be established.
However, many of the CDs sold are in fact either compilation CDs, or crossover CDs, and are not considered to be classical music by serious musicians.

A chart parser is a type of parser commonly used for natural languages that uses a data-driven approach based on a set of grammatical rules and a dictionary with each of the possible grammatical senses of each word indicated.
In bidirectional chart parsing, edges of the chart are marked with a direction, either forwards or backwards, and rules are enforced on the direction edges must point in to be combined into further edges.
In incremental chart parsing, the chart is constructed incrementally as the text is edited by the user, with each change to the text resulting in the minimal possible corresponding change to the chart.

The UK Classical chart top ten, normally the preserve of 'Best Ever Best of …' compilations, Babes of various varieties and Russell Watson, is topped this week by something resoundingly and refreshingly 'core': Sir Simon Rattle's recording of Mahler's Symphony No 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic.
The disc, on EMI, is a live recording of Rattle's inaugural concerts as the chief conductor and artistic director of the orchestra, and released within of month of those concerts to coincide with a substantial European tour that passed through last weekend to ecstatic reviews.
The only other core classical inclusion in this week's top ten is — surprisingly but pleasingly (especially as it was a Gramophone Editor's Choice) — Moeran's Symphony and Sinfonietta, performed by David Lloyd-Jones and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for Naxos, at No 8.
