The General Election is probably the best known of the various elections in Britain, it refers to the election of Members of Parliament to the House of Commons in Westminster and is the only type of election that may elect MPs.
Members are elected in the UK from twelve regions, each electing between 3 and 10 members according to a proportional distribution under the D'Hondt Formula.
The last elections to Ulster unitary authorities were in 2001; to the Scottish authorities in 2003; and to the Welsh authorities in 2004.

Police in the UK are investigating claims of widespread fraud and vote-stealing in postal ballots for tomorrow’s European and local elections, it was confirmed today.
The move came after a Liberal Democrat candidate was held last week after two men called at a house in Oldham and offered to look after the ballot papers for everyone at the address.
Chief Inspector Stuart Harman, of Oldham Police, said: “Over the last week we have received a number of allegations of election fraud, all of which are being thoroughly examined to establish if those involved have breached election protocol or broken the law.

In the Assembly elections the number of Labour votes locally was similar to the 2000 vote; Ken Livingstone's number of votes locally went up.
The Liberal Democrats failed to win locally in the GLA elections despite running both Southwark and Lambeth councils, and Simon Hughes did worse locally than the rest of his party when standing for mayor, despite being an MP in the area; he did even worse across London.
In Southwark, the ruling LibDems did disasterously in the European elections, with just 23.5% of the vote compared with about 40% in the 2002 vote.
