UKERNA is the trading name for the JNT Association, which since 1994 has had responsibility for the management of the United Kingdom’s Higher Education networking programme.
UKERNA is an acronym for United Kingdom Education and Research Network Association.
UKERNA now manages the operation and development of the JANET network under a Service Level Agreement from JISC.

 Second Quarterly Report of the UKERNA Secure Email Project
This is the second quarterly report of the UKERNA Secure Email Project to investigate how tools might be made available to allow secure email to be relatively painless for members of the ac.uk to use.
Paul Leyland then reminded the meeting that UKERNA had commissioned a report, and that implementation would be the task of a follow-on study.
UKERNA is providing web space to allow duplication of the existing data at Cambridge to be tested.

My intention is to submit it to the DTI on Wednesday 31st March, to be sure of complying with their consultation period.
UKERNA manages the operation and development of the JANET and SuperJANET networks, used by the UK Research and Higher Education communities, under a Service Level Agreement from the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) of the UK Higher Education Funding Councils.
UKERNA is therefore well placed to comment on the cryptography requirements of those communities.

UKERNA commissioned a study and report describing the options for improving the security of electronic mail for academic community users in the JANET community.
We also recommend that UKERNA commission workers to integrate PGP into those mailers which are not quite so amenable but are in widespread use and which existing attempts at integration have demonstrated that it is possible to a large extent.
The business of the meeting was to introduce the UKERNA Secure Email project to interested parties; to describe the current state of integration of PGP into mail user agents; to ascertain the current level of usage of PGP in the community and to formulate plans for improving the integration of PGP into commonly used MUAs.

In both cases the messages from Bob Day of UKERNA are probably the most significant, along with digested comments from someone at UKERNA (probably Bob, too) in the second message from Ifan Moelwyn Hughes (imh), particularly the comment that "the hosting of Web pages counts as 'use of JANET'".
The JISC (not UKERNA, we don't have opinions as it's not our job) has a guideline (which hopefully comes out properly in its forthcoming connection policy document) that such use where a university is organising a conference as part of its own teaching or research activities would attract no additional charge.
I do not believe that it is, or should be, within the remit of UKERNA or JISC to place limits upon how a University may choose to use its own filestore, or to allow its own filestore to be used.

It was noted that a requirement for UKERNA to attend NG meetings had been included in the UKERNA SLA for 2000/2001.
UKERNA was also to publish details of how they intended to monitor the connection from a MAN into an institution.
It was agreed that an item would be added to the list of modifications to the UKERNA SLA that they should keep a list, which would be updated weekly, detailing service point hotspots and network choke points and what remedial actions were being taken.
