UMIST gained its Royal Charter (A charter granted by the sovereign (especially in Great Britain)) in 1956 and became a fully autonomous university (Establishment where a seat of higher learning is housed, including administrative and living quarters as well as facilities for research and teaching) in 1993.
UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester (additional info and facts about Victoria University of Manchester) retained close ties for the second half of the 20th Century (additional info and facts about 20th Century), with UMIST students being awarded, or having the choice of, a University of Manchester degree until full autonomy in 1993.
UMIST, together with the Victoria University of Manchester (additional info and facts about Victoria University of Manchester) ceased to exist on 1 October 2004, when they were combined in a new single University of Manchester (additional info and facts about University of Manchester) hoping to combine the strengths and traditions of both.

In 1824, UMIST was founded to train artisans the basic principles of science by part-time study.
UMIST has 21 academic departments and specialist research centres, of which 12 are rated 5 or 5* for research.

The latest version of the UMIST database, RATE99, provides the rate coefficients of 4113 gas-phase reactions among 396 species involving the 12 elements H, He, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Si, P, S, Cl and Fe.
With the exception of the elements Na, Mg and Fe, which are included in the ratefile to produce a source of ionisation in dark clouds, the chemistries of the other elements are fairly comprehensive.
Astrophysics at UMIST and the work of YHLT in particular are supported via a grant from the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC).

Millions of working days are lost every year because of workplace bullying according to a new survey, the most comprehensive of its kind, to be released on 14 February.
The survey of 5,500 UK employees across the public, private and voluntary sectors, conducted by the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and supported by the TUC and CBI, reveals the extent of workplace bullying in Britain today and looks at the impact on staff morale and the economy.
UMIST will publish a full academic report in November.

The School of Mathematics has been created by merging two established and successful mathematics departments and will form one of the largest and most research-active schools of mathematics in the country.

In the UK, a courageous academic, Mona Baker of UMIST, has severed her ties with two Israeli researchers in a show of support for the Palestinians.
Mona Baker, a professor of linguistics at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (Umist), angrily denied the charge levelled at her by the NUS.
Her employers at UMIST have since been inundated with abusive emails and phone calls from Jewish groups demanding that she be sacked.
