Unified Modeling Language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
UML uses a graphical notation which has text equivalents in Java and other object-oriented languages, and also equivalents in high-level ontology languages which are discussed elsewhere.
UML is not a method and does not force one, however it is a requisite for the Rational Unified Process created by the Rational Software Corporation.
Although UML is a widely recognized and used standard, it is criticized for having imprecise semantics, which causes its interpretation to be subjective and therefore difficult for the formal test phase.

UML isn't suitable for high-end hosting, but there are plenty of situations where a UML is significantly more cost effective than a dedicated machine, which would have been the only solution without a virtual machine.
UML is distributed as a patch against the main kernel tree, so in order to build a UML kernel, we first need to start off with the basic kernel source.
UML is quite impressive at throwing up bugs in the host kernel and numerous people, including myself, have experienced major stability issues, particularly with the VM subsystem, when using lots of UMLs on a machine.

One of the new notations that appeared in UML 2 was the socket notation to show interfaces required by a class.
The UML means different things to different people, which is why I find the notion of people using a different UmlMode useful.
The reason for this unhappiness is that the drive for UML 2 was to formalize and complete the UML to support MDA; primarily for UmlAsProgrammingLanguage (and secondarily for UmlAsBlueprint).

 Introduction to OMG UML
The "Available" version of the UML 2.0 Superstructure specification (that is, the version that has finished its first maintenance release and been built into vendor products) has been completed, and is available to everyone for free download.
In UML 2.0, you can nest a set of classes inside the component that manages them, or embed a behavior (such as a state machine) inside the class or component that implements it.
Improved Behavioral Modeling: In UML 1.X, the different behavioral models were independent, but in UML 2.0, they all derive from a fundamental definition of a behavior (except for the Use Case, which is subtly different but still participates in the new organization).
