		UMNO politicians actively campaigned in Singapore for the Singapore Alliance, contending that the Singapore Malays were being treated as second-class citizens under the Chinese-dominated but multiracial PAP government.
		On 25 June 1987, an appeal was filed by 12 of the UMNO delegates (one of whom, Hussain bin Manap, withdrew unexpectedly in August) to have the assembly and the election of April 1987 declared null.
		UMNO sees itself as representing the Malays and Muslims of Malaysia, although any Bumiputra (indigenous Malaysian, a category which includes people such as the non-Malay and usually non-Muslim Kadazan, Iban, Dayak, etc. of East Malaysia) may join the party.

	Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Razaleigh was born in Kota Baru to Tengku Hamzah bin Zainal Abidin, who was the last appointed Chief Minister of Kelantan.
		In 1971, he was elected to the UMNO Supreme Council, and was elected as a Vice-President of UMNO in 1975.
		Razaleigh's planning is reputed to have been the main reason the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, of which UMNO is a member, almost totally defeated the opposition Islamic party of PAS in the 1978 general election and the Kelantan state elections of the same year.

		When Umno was declared illegal and the leaders of team A (led by Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad) registered Umno Baru, those in team B grouped together to form Semangat 46.
		The party's name owes to the year of Umno's founding in 1946, and its supporters claimed that the party was upholding the original principles of Umno that was compromised under Dr. Mahathir's autocratic reign as the President of Umno and the country's Prime Minister.
		Contrast this with Umno, a party where the leader discourage competition (he bans his post from being challenged altogether) supposedly for the sake of stability and continuity; but most probably because he feels threatened by the competition and would like to keep an iron grip on the party.

		The fact that Umno (Baru) was registered in 1987 while Merdeka was granted in 1957, 30 years earlier, certainly strengthens Ronnie’s claim.
		But that Umno is a separate legal entity and it did so very late in the day after many others had already launched the Merdeka struggle -- and for all intents and purposes, Umno ‘hijacked’ the struggle for Merdeka and was in fact handed independence by the British on a silver platter.

		In April 1987, after an UMNO leadership contest in which Mahathir very nearly lost to Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, there were allegations that several delegates who had voted were drawn from branches not properly registered under the Societies Act 1966.
		An appeal was filed by eleven UMNO delegates to have the elections declared null and void.
		The eleven UMNO delegates then launched an appeal in the Supreme Court to have the 1987 elections alone declared illegal and the party not an unlawful society.
