United Nations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The UN describes itself as a "global association of governments facilitating cooperation in international law, security, economic development, and social equity." It was founded by 51 states and as of 2005 it consists of 191 member states, including virtually all internationally-recognized independent nations.
UN membership is open to all peace-loving states that accept the obligations of the UN Charter and, in the judgement of the organization, are able and willing to fulfil these obligations.
UN peace operations are funded by assessments, using a formula derived from the regular scale, but including a surcharge for the five permanent members of the Security Council (who must approve all peacekeeping operations); this surcharge serves to offset discounted peacekeeping assessment rates for less developed countries.

Britain's UN ambassador in 1967, Lord Caradon, an author of the Resolution, argued that: "It would have been wrong to demand that Israel return to its positions of June 4, 1967, because those positions were undesirable and artificial."
The American UN ambassador at the time, former Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, said 242 omitted reference to Israel's withdrawing from "the" or "all" territories in order to enable "less than a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territory, inasmuch as Israel's prior frontiers had proved to be notably insecure."
"UN SC 242 calls on Israel to withdraw only from territories occupied in the course of the Six Day War - that is, not from 'all' the territories or even from 'the' territories...Ingeniously drafted resolutions calling for withdrawal from 'all' the territory were defeated in the Security Council and the General Assembly one after another.

Poulsen's comments follow a report by the UN Coordinator for Afghanistan on 6 April, stating that since June 2000, as many as 700,000 Afghans had left their homes because of drought, conflict, or a combination of both.
According to the UN, registration of arrivals is under way in the camps, which will enable officials to determine the specific rural areas and districts from which the families are fleeing.
The Office of the UN Coordinator for Afghanistan maintains that, given the scale of need both in the camps and in rural parts of western Afghanistan, the aid community will have to continue providing assistance at current or higher levels for at least the next 12 months.

The EU's relations with the United Nations - a wide-ranging partnership
The main areas in which the UN is active today — such as promoting international peace and security, promoting respect for human rights, protecting the environment, fighting disease, fostering development and reducing poverty — are also priorities for the European Union.
The UN, with its universal mandate and legitimacy, is uniquely placed to advance global solutions to our common challenges.
Strengthening co-operation with the UN and with the specialized agencies is thus an important priority for the EU as a whole, as was underlined by the Göteborg European Council of June 2001 and as was reinforced more recently by the European Council of December 2003.

Amnesty International welcomes UN Secretary-General's bold steps to strengthen human rights in major new report
The prominent place which the report about UN reform gives to human rights is a clear acknowledgement of the need to strengthen the protection of human rights in every country.
With the necessary political will, this time of UN reform offers a rare opportunity to create an effective UN human rights body consistent with the promise of the UN Charter of a world where peace and justice prevails and all people enjoy all their human rights and fundamental freedoms without discrimination.
The report proposes the creation of a new UN human rights body - a Human Rights Council - either as a new principal organ of the UN, which would require an amendment to the UN Charter, or as a subsidiary body of the General Assembly, which could be established under Article 22 of the Charter.
