  WHERE FREEDOM IS TREASON
Jurisdiction of the UN For many years, therefore, the main task was to affirm the jurisdiction of the United Nations to consider the situation in South Africa as a political problem of international concern rather than one of many human rights violations in the world, and to develop an international consensus against apartheid.
In resolutions adopted by large majorities, it has recognised the right of the liberation movements to resort to armed struggle, declaring that "freedom fighters" are entitled to prisoner-of-war status.
On the other hand, the liberation movements of South Africa were granted Observer status by UN organs in 1974 and recognised by the General Assembly in 1975 as the authentic representatives of the overwhelming majority of the people of the country.

UN and the struggle against apartheid: Chronology
The General Committee of the General Assembly did not support the request of the Union of South Africa that the Indian complaint be removed from the agenda on the grounds that the matter was essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of South Africa.
The General Assembly adopted resolution 44(I), expressing the opinion that the treatment of Indians in South Africa should be in conformity with the international obligations under the agreements concluded between the two Governments, and the relevant provisions of the United Nations Charter.
The operative paragraphs were general and only one referred specifically to South Africa, expressing "regret and concern" that the South African Government "has not yet responded to appeals of the General Assembly that it reconsider governmental policies which impair the right of all racial groups to enjoy the same rights and fundamental freedoms".

December 16, 1991, when the United Nations General Assembly repealed, by a vote of 111 to 25 (and 30 abstentions) the 1975 resolution that described Zionism as a form of racism.
Condemned in the U.S. press as “abominable,” “repulsive,” “odious” and “the UN’s greatest sin” and condemned by a joint Congressional resolution in 1985, its passage was chalked up to the growing power of oil-rich Islamic states, the influence of the Soviet Union, and general anti-Semitism.
Having publicly opined that the UN is useless, he may sabotage the venerable institution rather like the Japanese delegate Masuoka Yosuke did the League of Nations in 1933.

Sanctions' Effects on Human Rights Violations
Effectiveness of Sanctions: The majority of sanctions against Iraq continue to be maintained, though international enthusiasm for and participation in the sanctions has waned dramatically, primarily due to the decrease in quality of life since the imposition of the sanctions.
In general, imposing sanctions on an economically weaker and less internationally powerful country increases their success rate because the target country's economy is easier to undermine.
Generally, despite the mixed results of the two case studies, sanctions enacted for the purposes of modest policy change and the destabilization of a regime are more effective than attempts to disrupt military adventures, impair military potential or cause a major policy change.
