The United Nations’ celebration of World Environment Day will be held on Monday, June 5 in Algiers, Algeria.
This year’s theme ‘Deserts and Desertification: Don’t Desert Drylands!’ emphasises the importance of protecting drylands, which cover 40% of the world's land surface and are the habitat and source of livelihood for nearly two billion people.
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 as an event that encourages governments, individuals and community groups to participate proactively in countless activities to improve the environment.

My job was to sit down at a table of mayors and delegates from all around the world and be a notetaker while they hashed out the wording on 3 specific Accords within a category that most interested them.
The next day, everyone gathered under the rotunda of City Hall with their golden pens and signed the Accords.

The United Nations today marked World Environment Day by shining the spotlight on the world’s deserts, from appeals to curb the desertification of dry-lands to a major report on the dramatic impact of climate change to a list of do’s and don’ts for tourists and a children’s painting competition.
“World Environment Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the dependence of refugees and the internally displaced on natural resources and to urge everyone to be considerate in the use and protection of these resources," the head of UNHCR's Division of Operational Services, Arnauld Akodjenou, said.
Meanwhile UNEP issued guidelines for the increasing numbers of desert tourists to preserve the environment, from drinking purified, as opposed to mineral water in plastic bottles, taking old batteries back home, and using gas rather than firewood for cooking.

The signing ceremony on World Environment Day in the ornate rotunda at City Hall committed more than 50 of the world's largest cities to "build an ecologically sustainable, economically dynamic, and socially equitable future for our urban citizens," organizers said.
He added the UN goal of halving poverty by 2015 would not be met unless city planning was less haphazard.
