UNEP is working closely with national governments, international experts and organisations to provide environmental information to the scientific body of knowledge required for such a system, to support the development of the actual mechanism and strengthening the capacities of the national environmental authorities to participate in the national early warning platforms.
UNEP Deployments: In collaboration with the Joint UNEP-OCHA Environment Unit, the UNEP Task Force is currently organising a fact-finding mission to Yemen between 5-10 February for an initial rapid assessment of the environmental impacts of the tsunami.
UNEP is currently developing guidance materials for national authorities to screen reconstruction projects for possible environmental impacts, and to ensure all projects take lessons learned from the tsunami on environmental planning and management into account.

 Mesopotamian Marshlands
GRID-Geneva and Sioux Falls, in collaboration with UNEP's Regional Office for West Asia, have embarked on a joint study to monitor environmental change in the Tigris-Euphrates drainage basin.
The results of this study, "The Mesopotamian Marshlands: Demise of an Ecosystem" was published in 2001 and was accompanied with an interactive IMS-based website (prototype), a suite of maps, and posters to help raise regional and global awareness about the scale and significance of environmental change in one of the world's leading water flashpoints.
UNEP hopes that such scientific assessments will promote a better understanding of the challenges facing transboundary waters in the Middle East in the new millennium and encourage the international community to assist riparian countries in reaching an agreement on sharing the rivers' waters.

 United Nations Environment Programme
UNEP led the process to the finalization of the recent Lusaka Agreement, between Kenya, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, which provides for the establishment of an international task force for combating illegal trafficking in African wildlife including rhinos.
UNEP was established as a result of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972.
Its mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnerships in caring for the environment by enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without comprising that of future generations.

One of UNEP’s main functions since its inception at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972 is to keep under review the world environmental situation, as mandated by UN General Assembly resolution 2997 (XXVII).
For this reason UNEP’s Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) has initiated a consultative process to identify gaps and needs in the current assessment structure, and the means to address them.
The Executive Director of UNEP will report on the consultation and present a revised version of the Environment Watch proposal and the outcome of the Situation Analysis and Capacity Building Needs Assessment to the 9th Special Session of UNEP’s Governing Council to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 7-9 February 2006.

The Regional Seas Programmes of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) include all of the small island developing States, and have done much to encourage regional cooperation among islands on environmental issues, such as through the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP).
UNEP is also collaborating with the Global Islands Network in building an information system to support all small islands.

 UNEP ANNOUNCES FIRST MAJOR PARTNER FOR YOUTH AND CHILDREN'S PROGRAMME
Called "Tunza", meaning to treat with care or affection in the East African language of Kiswahili, the strategy aims to engage young people in the work of UNEP and enhance their participation in environment and sustainable development issues.
Approved by UNEP's Governing Council in February 2003, the strategy outlines activities and events at the subregional, regional and global levels to be implemented for a six-year period.

Throughout the response process, UNEP’s counterparts are the national environmental authorities in the affected countries with whom UNEP identifies the urgent environmental risks, assist in mobilizing environmental assistance and provide environmental expertise.
UNEP is working closely with UNDG and UNDP as well as the UN country teams to conduct needs assessments in (all) affected regions, to identify the recovery and reconstruction needs for the medium term.
UNEP staff members and external experts are being sent on these missions as has been agreed with UN colleagues.

 UNEP planning workshop on environmental information systems
UNEP's assessment function is only effective if it delivers environmental information for decision-making, and the new information technologies are radically changing the potential for doing this.
UNEP produces a vast array of information products (technical reports, overviews, databases, clearinghouses, maps, websites, press releases, policy papers, etc) many of which are tailored to different user needs, but could easily be adapted.
As UNEP’s products vary in complexity, a simple set of guidelines is needed to facilitate breaking down large products, such as the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) reports, into discrete components which can stand as products in their own right.

 Coral Reef Unit
The United Nations Environment Programme Coral Reef Unit (CRU) was established by the UNEP Executive Director on 1 December 2000 within the Division of Environmental Conventions (DEC), in close association with the Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA).
It is now located in Cambridge, England, at the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre, under the responsibility of the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI).
It is responsible for UNEP's participation in the International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN) and other international programmes, and provides the administrative base for the ICRAN Coordinating Unit.

 UNEP - Marshlands Project - Home
The project is implemented by the International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) of UNEP Division of Technology, Industry, and Economics (DTIE).
In 2001, UNEP alerted the world to their plight with satellite images that showed 90 percent of the wetlands had been lost.
The goal of the project is to support the sustainable management and restoration of the Iraqi Marshlands, by facilitating strategy formulation, monitoring marsh conditions, raising capacity of Iraqi decision makers, and providing water, sanitation, and wetland management options on a pilot basis.
