  United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) (established December 14, 1950) protects and supports refugees at the request of a government or the United Nations and assists in their return or resettlement.
UNHCR was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1954 and 1981.
UNHCR thus has missions in Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Serbia and Montenegro and Ivory Coast to assist and provide services to IDPs.

UNHCR operates in Poland on the basis of three documents: statute of the organisation, specifying the organisation's detailed responsibilities, Geneva Convention (to monitor the compliance with which it was established) and the contract with the Polish Government.
UNHCR keeps providing information and knowledge to the authorities in charge of the procedure of granting the refugee status in particularly complex cases: information about the refugee's country of origin as well as studies, comments and research concerning the situation of various refugee groups or legislative procedures.
However, UNHCR keeps telling about the refugees' issues all around the year - the organisation regularly participates in conferences, training programs and seminars concerning refugees, and raises refugees' problems on meetings where the issues of immigration, tolerance or human rights are discussed.

UNHCR expressed concern that the Rwandans would become involved in the fighting in the DRC, which would disqualify them from international protection and be in violation of the Organization of African Unity's Refugee Convention.
UNHCR and non-governmental organizations had to quit offices in the east of the country in June as a result of the fighting, along with around 30,000 Angolans who crossed into Shaba province in the DRC.
UNHCR proposed that they be screened to determine the validity of their claims to refugee status.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in the Republic of Moldova in 1997 to support the Government to introduce legislative and procedural structures required to assist persons in need of international protection pursuant to international standards.
The main objective of UNHCR is to assist the Moldovan authorities in assuming the responsibilities resulting from signing of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, the 1967 Protocol thereto and the adoption of the Law on Refugee Status.
UNHCR then rehabilitated hospitals and educational institutions in Chisinau and in areas affected by the 1992 conflict and procured furniture for Moldovan schools in Transdniestria teaching along the curriculum approved by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova.

UNHCR's Erica Feller said that she was hopeful that the EXCOM will endorse the agenda for protection, and also a plan of action for its implementation.
She said that UNHCR has a responsibility to improve protection, that protection is not as good as it should be in some places, and that UNHCR are for the moment carrying out a reorganisation of the Department for International Protection (DIP).

ISLAMABAD (UNHCR) - The number of individuals checked in the year since the UN Refugee Agency introduced state-of-the-art iris recognition tests for refugees seeking assistance to return to Afghanistan passed the 200,000 mark this week.
This is the first field-use of such iris technology anywhere in the world and it has performed flawlessly despite the harsh conditions in the heat and dust of Pakistan's border territories with Afghanistan.
UNHCR now operates two iris verification centres in Pakistan on a Sunday to Thursday basis - in Quetta and Peshawar - and one at Ali Zai in Pakistan's border Tribal Areas that operates only on Monday.

UNHCR staff had interviewed the nine upon their arrival in Tanzania in late December and found that the two families – one of six people, the other of three – both had genuine reasons to fear persecution if they went back to Burundi.
Despite assurances made to UNHCR that the nine would be granted refugee status in Tanzania, the Tanzanian authorities forcibly returned the two families to Burundi on 23rd January.
While remaining grateful to Tanzania for their long standing commitment to refugees, UNHCR appeals to the authorities to ensure that all asylum seekers continue to be treated fairly in accordance with international law.
