L' UNICEF è guidato dalla Convenzione dei diritti dell'infanzia del 1989 e si adopera per affermare i diritti dei bambini come principio etico permanente e per stabilire criteri standard di comportamento verso i bambini.
L' UNICEF mobilita strategie politiche e risorse materiali dei paesi, in particolare quelli in via di sviluppo, per assicurare un pronto soccorso per bambini e per far crescere la loro capacità di creare adeguate politiche sociali e di assistenza vero i bambini e le loro famiglie.
L' UNICEF punta, attraverso i suoi programmi nazionali, a sviluppare uguali diritti per donne e bambine e a sostenere la loro completa partecipazione nella vita sociale, politica ed economica dei paesi in cui vivono.
