  WTO | 2005 News items - The Secretariats of the WTO and UNIDO hold side-event at Hong Kong Ministerial
On the occasion of the WTO 6th Ministerial Meeting in Hong Kong, WTO and UNIDO held a side-event on 15 December 2005 on the implementation of the Joint Cooperation Agreement between WTO and UNIDO and on the UNIDO Cotton Initiative for Africa.
UNIDO's statement reaffirmed its commitment to the Joint Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the WTO, as well as the commitment of UNIDO's new Director-General to trade capacity building as one of the fundamental objectives of UNIDO.
The side-event also focused on the contributions by UNIDO to the implementation of the WTO Mandate on the development assistance aspects of cotton.

UNIDO’s Input Too often in sustainable development debates, the positive contribution of industry to the social and economic dimension of sustainability does not receive sufficient attention nor is credit given to industry for the progress made in addressing the negative environmental consequences of industrialization.
UNIDO’s activities in the region since the Rio Summit in 1992 has been guided by the principles of ecologically sustainable industrial development (ESID) that was developed as an input for the UNCED process.

UNIDO's Constitution, composed of a preamble, 29 articles and three annexes, was adopted by consensus at Vienna on 8 April 1979 by a Conference of Plenipotentiaries.
UNIDO's primary objective, its Constitution stipulates, is the promotion of industrial development in developing countries with a view to assisting the establishment of a new international economic order.
UNIDO shall, among other things, assist developing countries in establishing and operating industries; provide a forum and act as an instrument to serve developing and industrialized countries in their contacts, consultations and negotiations; and develop special measures designed to promote co-operation among developing countries and between the developed and developing countries.

 UNIDO NAMED FIFTH CORE AGENCY OF GLOBAL COMPACT
The invitation to UNIDO to become a core agency, extended at a meeting of United Nations Agencies on 12 May in Geneva, Switzerland, was motivated by the need to pay more attention to the specific needs and support requirements of small- and medium-sized enterprises -- an area in which UNIDO’s expertise is globally acknowledged.
A perspective on UNIDO's role in the Global Compact can be drawn from the UNIDO study Corporate Social Responsibility:  Implications for Small and Medium Enterprises in Developing Countries (www.unido.org/userfiles/BethkeK/csr.pdf) which reviews the relevance and implications for small- and medium-sized enterprises in developing countries of the increasing adoption of corporate responsibility approaches by transnational corporations.
UNIDO's support to small and medium-sized enterprises and its work with the private sector received special recognition from Secretary- General Kofi Annan in December 2002.  In a letter to UNIDO Director-General Carlos Magariños, the Secretary-General commended UNIDO’s work and invited the organization to "explore concrete modalities of a strengthened collaboration" with the Global Compact.

A UNIDO specialists last year presented a series of proposed laws required for absorption of capital investment in Iran that as welcomed by the government authorities and even some Majlis MPs and paved the ground for formulation of laws and amendment of some.
