  United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
UNIKOM, the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission, was established on April 9, 1991 following the Gulf War by Security Council resolution 689 (1991) and fully deployed by early May.
In February 1993, the mandate was extended to include physical action to prevent violations and the force was expanded to an intended three mechanized infantry battalions plus support.
The mandate of UNIKOM was completed on October 6, 2003.

On their way to the border they crossed a Kuwaiti checkpoint at the edge of the DMZ, as well as a UNIKOM checkpoint at the border, which is marked by a berm and trench constructed by the Kuwaiti authorities.
They were allowed to pass the UNIKOM checkpoint because, with darkness having just fallen, the sentries on duty mistook the white vehicle for one belonging to the United Nations.
UNIKOM maintained a high level of vigilance and, through its patrols and liaison activities, has significantly contributed to the reduction of tension and the maintenance of calm in its area of operation.

UNIKOM was called for by the Security Council in its formal cease-fire resolution on the gulf passed April 3 ending the successful coalition effort to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation.
UNIKOM's assignment is to ensure that no military personnel and equipment enter the 15-kilometer wide demilitarized zone and that no military fortifications and installations are maintained.
UNIKOM will monitor the Khor Abdullah waterway between Iraq and Kuwait and a largely barren and uninhabited demilitarized zone extending 10 kilometers into Iraq and 5 kilometers into Kuwait, based on the 200-kilometer border established in a 1963 agreement between the two countries.

UNIKOM's concept of operations is based on a combination of patrol and observation bases, observation points, ground and air patrols, investigation teams and liaison with the parties at all levels.
UNIKOM patrols the Khawr 'Abd Allah waterway by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft.
UNIKOM has also maintained contact and provided technical support to other United Nations missions working in Iraq and Kuwait, in particular to the Iraq-Kuwait Boundary Demarcation Commission until its dissolution in May 1993, and to the United Nations office dealing with the return of property from Iraq to Kuwait.

One UNIKOM officer said he had spotted two groups of what he thought were Iraqi soldiers in civilian clothes and vehicles cruising the DMZ in apparent intelligence-gathering missions.
UNIKOM troops, who come from armed forces in Europe, Africa, Asia and North and South Americas, are based in the DMZ and can go into Iraq to coordinate with officials there.
UNIKOM officers said they had advised their troops to be ready to evacuate the DMZ quickly in case of war and to watch UNIKOM's U.S. members, because they might get advance warning.

Unikom had raised its state of alert to phase four earlier in the day.
Unikom moved to phase three alert status on March 8 when it started moving non-essential personnel out of the zone and regrouping its observers away from isolated areas as the threat of a US-led war mounted.
Unikom was set up to monitor the 240km land and maritime border in the wake of the 1991 Gulf War to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation, and to ensure no violations occur in the DMZ.

Officers from four UNIKOM member-nations said a few thousand Iraqi troops moved closer to the border in recent weeks and began digging trenches on either side of the three north-south roads in the region.

In case anyone in the White House, with their limited military experience (after all, most of them supported the Vietnam War from deep in the college-deferred rear) does not know what a "DMZ" is; it is a demilitarized zone.
It would be ironic if the UNIKOM force, with contingents from over thirty countries, decided to do its duty to their Security Council mandate and were to "take physical action" to resist the oncoming hordes who would manifestly be violating the DMZ and the UN-demarked boundary.

He said UNIKOM had begun removing on Saturday some of its 230 civilian UN staff from their residential quarters in the demilitarised zone that runs the length of the 200-km border.
UN investigators reported on Friday that a commercial contractor was building new gates in a fence separating the two countries, a barrier US forces would have to cross if they invade Iraq from the Gulf state.
UNIKOM, which monitors the 12-year-old demilitarised border zone said the building of the seven gates — wide enough to accommodate a tank — followed recent sightings of US soldiers entering the Kuwaiti side of the zone.
