 OLD-COMPUTERS.COM : HISTORY / detailed info
The Uniservo I was for communication and intermediate storage between the input-output devices and the computer.
Uniservo used small tape reels because they each weighed 25 lbs, but were very reliable.
Uniservo II tapes moved at the same speed as the Uniservo I tapes- 100 inches per second but they were effectively twice as fast because twice as much information was recorded per inch.

A Uniservo may be used to read the coded, magnetic dots on the tape moving forward or backward and transfer the data in the form of electronic pulses to Univac.
A Uniservo may be used to record the results of Univac processing in the form of coded, magnetic dots on a metallic tape or a mylar tape moving forward.
The Uniservo is fully equipped with safety switches which apply brakes to the reels if either of the 2 loops exceeds the prescribed length.

 UNIVAC 1105
Sixteen to twenty four UNISERVO II[?] tape drives were connected, with a maximum capacity (not counting block overhead) of 1,200,000 words per tape.
Fixed point numbers had a 1 bit sign and a 35 bit value, with negative values represented in one's complement format.
The computer system weighed 63,753 lbs (floor loading 47 lbs/sq ft) and required a room 49 ft x 64 ft x 10 ft. The floor space for the computer was approximately 3,752 sq ft. The power, refrigeration and equipment room was approximately 2,450 sq ft.

The UNISERVOs, however, were the center of interest to visitors because of their very quick movements both forward and backward.
The use of the - character (0000010) for selecting the 10th UNISERVO is an example of using 1 of the three characters of the XS-3 code set that had a value of less than an XS-3 zero (1000011).
It was thought that 8 UNISERVOs would be all that were needed in the UNIVAC I. But advances in programming techniques were really moving in those days, especially in the area of sort algorithms where additional UNISERVOs were required.

 The Case 1107
The rounded cabinet at the very left of the frame is part of the TRW 530 "Logram computer", which was used primarily to convert tapes between UNISERVO II-A 200 BPI format and the 800 BPI IBM-compatible format used by the UNISERVO VIII-C drives on the 1108 at Chi Corporation.
All of its main cabinets went from floor to ceiling, with air conditioned air injected through the raised floor and exit air exhausted through the dropped ceiling.
UNISERVO is a trademark of Sperry Rand Corporation, since merged into Unisys Corporation.

In addition to the central complex, there were eight UNISERVO tape drives, an operator console, and a console typewriter/printer.
Early in the design of the UNIVAC system, Eckert and Mauchly had recognized that for the computer to be useful in handling the large volumes of data used in many business applications, such as payroll of inventory control, it would need to have a high speed input/output system.
Since punched cards would be slow, the company developed the UNISERVO tape units to be the primary input/output devices for the computer.

It could handle the central complex (processor and memory) and had i/o handlers for the 1004 card processor, the FH-220 drum, UNISERVO IIIC tape drives, and communications devices.
Since the 418 was primarily intended for real-time and communications applications, a wide range of data communications equipment could be connected to it.
In the 1990s, all the 418 hardware was gone, but the California Department of Water Resources was still running 418 emulation on a UNIVAC 1100/60 computer.

David Taylor Cost of Basic System Central Processing Unit, 10 Uniservos, Uniprinter, and 2 Unityper I were purchased at a total cost of $1,000,000.
Unless there is another read, write or rewind instruction immediately follow- ing, Univac may continue to compute while the reading, writing, and rewinding operations are being performed.

The basic configuration had one "Computer" and could be expanded to a multiprocessor with a second "Computer".
The "Processor" is an independent CPU (with a different instruction set from the "Computer"s) and provides control for 12 to 24 Magnetic drum storage units, 4 to 40 UNISERVO II UNISERVO II tape drives, 2 Electronic page recorders, 1 or 2 High-speed printers, and 0 or 1 High-speed punchcard reader.
The LARC used core memory core memory banks of 2500 words each, housed 4 banks per memory cabinet.

 Mainframe
A Solid State system consisted of the CPU and drum memory, card reader, card punch, and printer.
There was the option of adding a tape controller and up to ten UNISERVO II tape drives.
The drives could read both mylar tape and the old UNIVAC metallic tape: the mode was selected by a switch on the front of the drive.
