The UNIVAC 1106 was the third member of Sperry Rand's UNIVAC 1100 series of computers, introduced in December 1969 and was absolutely identical to the UNIVAC 1108 in instruction set.
Early versions of the UNIVAC 1106 were simply half speed UNIVAC 1108 systems.
Later Sperry Rand used a different memory system which was inherently slower and cheaper than that of the UNIVAC 1108.

The UNIVAC 1107 did not have guard mode (although the 1107 at Case Institute of Technology was modified to implement it).
The UNIVAC 1106 was absolutely identical to the 1108 in instruction set.

I last used a drum on a Univac 1106 (FASTRAND II), the file system was the same as a disk drive.
Univac had fixed head drums and moving head drums, don't recall the capacity (it wasn't all that big).
The drums on the 1106 were retired in 1971 when it was upgraded to a dual processor 1108 with a room full of short stack disk drives (20MB packs).

 A comparison of sorts, revisited.
It is the Basic program given in "A Comparison of Sorts' that was modified for use on a Univac 1106 system and had the quicksort technique appended to it.
The conclusions that may be drawn from Table V are very similar to those already drawn from Table II, except that quick-sort is now predicted to be a constant 1.663 times as fast as Shell-Metzner.
In conclusion, while the understanding of the logic of the Shell-Metzner sort algorithm provides an interesting exercise, and while its sorting time is faster than that of the bubble sort, the delayed replacement sort and several other techniques, it is less efficient than quicksort.

The operating system used today on the 1100 and 2200 Series is an outgrowth of EXEC 8 which was written for the UNIVAC 1108 in the late 1960s, but EXEC 8 was not the first UNIVAC operating system.
UNIVAC's systems programming group in St. Paul started work on an operating system for the 1107, which eventually became known as EXEC I. It was written in the assembly language (known as SLEUTH) of the 1107, comprised some 25,000 lines of code, and occupied about 8K of the 1107's 32K of memory.
The ALGOL compiler was written at Case Institute of Technology, as part of an arrangement whereby it received an 1107 to replace its old UNIVAC I. As a result of its late appearance, only 36 1107s were sold, but fortunately UNIVAC was prompt in announcing and delivering its third generation 1108 computer.
