Operating system - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The name "Unix" is a trademark of The Open Group which licenses it for use to any operating system that has been shown to conform to the definitions that they have cooperatively developed.
Unix systems are used heavily as server systems in business, as well as workstations in academic and engineering environments.
An operating system is conceptually broken into three sets of components: a user interface (which may consist of a graphical user interface and/or a command line interpreter or "shell"), low-level system utilities, and a kernel--which is the heart of the operating system.

Major services in a UNIX system
UNIX and Linux don't incorporate the user interface into the kernel; instead, they let it be implemented by user level programs.
This arrangement makes the system more flexible, but has the disadvantage that it is simple to implement a different user interface for each program, making the system harder to learn.
With a network file system any file operations done by a program on one machine are sent over the network to another computer.
