UNLA (Uganda National Liberation Army) is the military arm of the Uganda National Liberation Front (UNLF).
It was the Ugandan force that fought side-by-side with the Tanzanian People's Defence Force (TPDF) to topple from power the regime of Idi Amin in Uganda.
After the overthrow of Amin on 11th April 1979, the UNLA became the national army of Uganda until it was defeated on 25th January 1986 by the guerrillas of the National Resistance Army (NRA) led by Yoweri Museveni.

UNLA soldiers entered the mission, located at Ombachi just outside Arua town, searching for ex-Amin guerrillas and in the process killed more than fifty of the civilians, many of them children.

In 1985, Acholi elements in the UNLA overthrew the Obote government, expelled other ethnic groups from the military, and put a predominately Acholi government in power under General Tito Okello Lutwa.
Following a short-lived power-sharing treaty between the UNLA and NRA, the NRA overthrew the government and took power.

This went hand in hand with the eviction of businessmen/women from their business premises, and renters of National Housing and Construction Corporation Flats as well.
The former UNLA soldiers who fled with their guns to Southern Sudan were reportedly dis-armed by the authority there and put in a refugee camp at Magwi, together with many civilians who fled with them.
Reportedly, this attack was by the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) of John Garang, but the general belief in the North was that it was an act of the NRA intended to destroy the former UNLA soldiers once and for all.
