UPN announced late Friday that it has sealed a two-year, $102 million deal with Buffy producer 20th Century Fox Television, ending months of speculation over whether Sarah Michelle Gellar's bloodsucker-battling heroine would leave the WB, her home since Buffy premiered in March 1997.
While it was widely known that UPN had plunked down an offer for the series, few thought the junior net would have enough cash to make any serious moves.
In a statement released Friday, the WB said it was no coincidence that UPN's Buffy announcement came just a day after the FCC loosened restrictions on network ownership, which would allow Fox (which has a pending merger with former UPN co-owner Chris-Craft) to merge with UPN.

 A Ubiquitous Public Network
The UPN would be subject to attacks from those who feel it conflicts with their interests, and from those of the "destructive hacker" variety.
Whether the UPN thrives or dies will be determined largely by its ability to survive these frequent onslaughts, and its robustness in the face of unrelenting adversity.
Eventually the usefulness of the UPN to the public would make it very much less likely that these sort of attacks would succeed, and it may well be that there would be effective pressure to improve the regulatory environment for the UPN, which could allow faster, cheaper links.

Vassey's first role was as a teenager on All My Children from 1988 to 1991, and she most recently starred in the short-lived series Push, Nevada and The Tick; in-between she has guest-starred on everything from Beverly Hills 90210 to ER to Two and a Half Men.
UPN has been known primarily for its African-American sitcoms and wrestling shows in the past, but America's fifth-largest network has been attempting to branch out in the last few years with shows like America's Next Top Model, which became a big hit, and dramas like The Haunting and The Twilight Zone, which didn't.
It's no accident that the first lesbian drama with a real possibility of getting on network TV is a detective series: not only is this a very popular genre with audiences, but detective series traditionally focus more on the crime-of-the-week than the character's personal lives.

To be fair, UPN has enjoyed occasional moments in the spotlight.
First-year drama "Veronica Mars" became a cause celebre among critics and a small but devout audience, which was rewarded when UPN renewed the show and gave it the post-"Model" time period.
Ostroff believes she has something special in "Veronica Mars" and "Everybody Hates Chris," but she also knows that UPN is still a network whose most-watched shows -- "Top Model" and "Smackdown!" -- draw only about 5 million viewers per week.
