  Connecticut US 1, 1A
US 1, 5, 6, and 7 were commissioned in 1926; US 44 and 202, in 1935.
US 1 was moved to the new road, and Main Street became US 1A for a few years.
US 1 was upgraded to a four-lane freeway here, with an interchange on each side: Route 80 in Old Saybrook (now Route 9), and Route 156 in Old Lyme.

 U.S. Route 1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
US 1 generally parallels Interstate 95, though it is significantly further inland (west) between Jacksonville, Florida and Petersburg, Virginia.
US 1 is also signed as State Route 4 for its entire length in the state.
US 1 is known as the "Fall Line Highway", since it generally follows the fall line between the Piedmont and the Atlantic Coastal Plain on its course through central North Carolina.

The beginning of RI 4 from US 1 NB - after this, US 1 is a two-lane surface street; RI 4 steals the expressway status.
This is the oldest of just three US 1 shields SB between Providence and the MA border, and just one of four total in that area.

 Northeast Expressway (US 1)
An examination of existing US 1 from the new expressway to MA 128 indicates that while this highway is adequate insofar as lane capacity is concerned, further improvements are necessary if it is to continue as a safe, efficient artery for the large volumes of high-speed traffic using this interstate route.
US 1 was to be converted into a 2-2-2-2 configuration along the existing grade: the inner lanes were to be controlled-access, and the outer lanes were to be service roads for the businesses that line the route.

This is the Trenton Freeway, US 1 south, at exit 4(Whitehead Road) in Lawrence Township.
This is the Trenton Freeway, US 1 north, at exit 2(Olden Avenue) in Trenton.
US 1 continues north as the Brunswick Pike, a 4 to 6 lane arterial.

It has remained somewhat unscathed because most traffic now takes either I-95 or US 40 in this corridor, and US 1 Belair Rd was the first road in Maryland to have three lanes; one lane in each direction with a "suicide lane" in the middle to accomodate left turn traffic.
In the 1940s, this was the Bypass US 1 and west of Bladensburg, co-signed with US 50; US 1 was also Alt US 50 and MD 411.
Green US shields mark the route, both green on white as appears at left, and the reverse white on green are used.

 US 1 Freeway (New Jersey)
Apparently, US 1 was routed onto the freeway to Strawberry Street and NJ 174 was built past there until it was finished.
Moreover, the US 1 straight-line diagram only shows NJ 174 as a contract north of Whitehead Road; the initial section of the Trenton Freeway may not have been NJ 174.
US 1 should become a major arterial highway with all major intersections grade-separated.

 Business US 1 Ends, Penndel, PA - Central PA/MD Roads
Business US 1 was first signed in the late 1980s when the US 1 expressway bypass was completed from Penndel to Morristown.
US 1 had followed the Lincoln Highway through the area but was moved to the bypass.
US 13 exits the frontage first, followed by a split back to US 1 south or to begin Business US 1 south.

Connections were also to be provided with Tonnelle Avenue (US 1 and US 9), which was to be the primary route to the (then-proposed) George Washington Bridge.

 MDRoads: Routes 1-6
State Route 1 is mentioned in several places as Baltimore-Washington Blvd, although it is very unlikely that it was ever signed as MD 1.
As US 301, it was upgraded from 2-lane to 4-lane dual in 1954.
Sometime between 1954 and 1961, US 301 was duplexed with US 50 to the Eastern Shore, leaving the portion north of US 50 as MD 3 again.

US 5 is four lanes undivided in some congested locations, and also shares a freeway with Route 15 from the Berlin Turnpike to Main Street in East Hartford.
From State Street, US 5 followed Edwards Street and Henry Street to Sherman Avenue; then south on Sherman to Winthrop Avenue; then southwest on Davenport Avenue to intersect US 1 where Route 10 does now.
In 1963, the state unveiled a plan to relocated US 5 as a four-lane expressway from I-84 in East Hartford to I-91 in East Windsor.

In 1926, US 1 was marked as PA 1 from the Delaware River to Philadelphia, and PA 12 from Philadelphia to the Maryland state line.
By 1928 the route was renumbered US 1.
By 1974, the US 1 limited access highway from Longwood to the Maryland state line was completed, realigning the road to the north slightly.

From US 1 SB, the very beginning of the Milford Parkway, as well as two cool shields for CT 15's Parkways.
This is looking westward, where US 1 came up a small rise from the Thames River bridge to cross railroad tracks; the alignment disappears west of the tracks, and the only way out is via the new road just to the north, that passes over all of the tracks.
From the fence that blocks the way on the western part of old US 1, I took this photo of the eastern abutment - the western side of the bridge is basically destroyed.

 Roosevelt Expressway (US 1)
Roosevelt Boulevard became part of the Federal highway system in 1926 when the US 1 designation was added, and in 1937, the Philadelphia Department of Streets transferred the highway to the Pennsylvania Department of Highways (now the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, or PennDOT).
North of the Pulaski Expressway interchange, the expressway was to veer north and west of the existing US 1 onto a new alignment.
North of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the expressway was to continue along the route of existing US 1 to Trenton.

The route followed by NE 1 is now marked as US 1 from the New Hampshire state line to near Saugus, then MA 99, MA 16, MA 28, and then MA 3 along the Charles River in Cambridge.
In addition, US 1 was realigned to its current path between Dedham and North Attleboro.
Between 1970 and 1976, US 1 was realigned to its present route to the north of Boston, becoming a limited access highway from Saugus to Boston, once in Boston, US 1 followed Charles Street, Starrow Drive, Jamaica Way, and the VFW Parkway.

Assigned in 1926, US 1 entered New York through the Holland Tunnel and followed NY 1A alignment until 1931 when the George Washington Bridge was completed and US 1 was moved to where it enters New York today.
US 7's alignment was changed in 1930 and the southern terminus was moved to its present location in Norwalk, CT.
US 9E became US 9 south of Albany, and an extension of US 4 north of Albany.

There's more than just car dealerships along U.S. 1 in Jacksonville, there are the stip joints and hourly motels as well.
Oh and seriously don't stay in a motel anywhere near US 1 in Jacksonville, puch through to St Augustine.

It was to serve as a radial route that would ultimately connect to the Cobbs Creek and Crosstown expressways within the city of Philadelphia, forming a continuous east-west corridor.
Early proposals had the Lansdowne Expressway routed along the existing US 1 (State Road) through Springfield, and continuing south and west of the Mid-County Expressway (I-476) into Chester County.
The Lansdowne Expressway may have had the US 1 designation, since it was to connect the proposed West Philadelphia Expressway with the proposed Media Bypass.

As part of old NC 50, US 1 comes very close to the SC border but all photos here are in NC.
A person lives off old US 1 in a tent but does get a nice view of the untouched Everetts Mill lake.
This picture, taken along the US 1 mainline, shows what used to be a bridge going over the CSX RR tracks.

While Japan's defense industries were suppressed by the American occupation authorities after the country's defeat, they slowly began to re-emerge as the US turned to Japan as an East Asian ally in the Cold War against the Soviet Union.
The Kawanishi company was resurrected in 1949 as "Shin Meiwa", in the relatively humble role of a service company that overhauled American, and later Japanese, military and civil aircraft.
However, the company had not forgotten its roots, and in 1959 Shin Meiwa rebuilt a Grumman UF-1 Albatross provided by the US Navy to experiment with new flying boat concepts.

This 2002 photo shows the main cantilever span of the Maurice J. Tobin Bridge (US 1) from the Mystic River waterfront in Chelsea.
In the years immediately following the opening of the span, connections were constructed to the Central Artery (I-93 and US 1) and the Northeast Expressway (US 1).
The US 1 designation first appeared on the bridge in 1976.
