The 11th Airborne Division arrived in (A Pacific island north of Australia; the 2nd largest island in the world; governed by Australia and Indonesia) New Guinea, 25 May 1944, and continued training, leaving for the (A republic on the Philippine Islands; achieved independence from the United States in 1946) Philippines 11 November 1944.

The 11th Airborne Division was activated at Camp Mackall NC on 25 Feb 1943 under the command of MG Joseph Swing.
Departing the US on 8 May 1944 from Camp Stoneman CA the division landed at Dobadura, New Guinea and trained for the invasion of the Philippine Islands.
On 18 November the division landed near Tacloban, Leyte, and relieved the 7th Infantry Division in the mountains NW of Tacloban.

In 1950, the division started concentrating on training and preparation for "Exercise Swarmer," scheduled to be held in May 1950 near Ft. Bragg, N.C. As a result of re-supply techniques learned on "Swarmer," forces in the Korean Conflict had superior re-supply methods and mobility over the enemy forces.
Upon its restoration to the division, the 188th was redesignated a Parachute Infantry Regiment.
