AllRefer.com - cavalry (Military Affairs (nonnaval)) - Encyclopedia
Cavalry was used for scouting and pursuit of a routed enemy, but with a few exceptions infantry remained dominant in Europe until the threat of light cavalry relying on archery, typified by the Mongols (see Jenghiz Khan), brought about the adoption of heavy armored cavalry, developed first by the Parthian Empire.
Cavalry was employed against Germany at the beginning of World War II by the Polish and Soviet armies, but the highly mobile tank and armored units that were introduced in that war led to end of the use of mounted troops.
In the 19th cent., cavalry was frequently used by Europeans in colonial wars, by the U.S. army and Plains peoples in the Indian wars, and in the U.S. Civil War.

US military records detail abuse of detainees by Iraqis - The Boston Globe - Boston.com - Middle East - News
Privately, US commanders also express worry about their troops getting drawn into an Iraqi dirty war, particularly as several thousand military advisers embed this year with Iraqi units, putting them in a position to witness abusive action or be accused of acquiescing to it.
US officers say they regularly warn the Iraqis that failure to curtail abusive behavior could tarnish the image of the new security services, risking a loss of Iraqi public support, and jeopardizing US and other foreign assistance.
Senior members of the new Iraqi government have assured US commanders in private conversations that they are aware of the problem and are committed to addressing it, according to several US officers.
