		US 220 in North Carolina has a long and interesting history, but it will eventually be completely superseded by I-73 and, in some sections, I-74.
		US 220 then departs as a freeway going towards Asheboro and points south with the I-73 designation.
		At the US 311 interchange the future I-74 designation magically appears, since there is no determined interchange in place yet for I-74 multiplexing with I-73 and US 220 southward.

		As far as I can tell, US 220 was never even so much as planned to connect with its implied parent, US 20, which is a good 75 miles further north.
		Originally the south end of US 220 was in Cumberland MD. If you could obtain a photo of current or historic signage at the place, please let me know!

		I-73 would follow US 220 for the most part (bypassing US 220 to the west around Greensburo) and then US 1 south of Rockingham into South Carolina.
		Once you go south again on US 220 from I-40, you will start seeing Future I-73 shield for the first time (evidently there is a Future I-73 shield along US 220 north of I-40 as well).
		As you approach Rockingham, US 220 again widens to 4 lanes, but unlike the section in Guilford, Randolph, and Montgomery Counties, there are no I-73 or I-74 shields along this part.

		Currently the multiplex has three designations, 'Future' I-73/74 which runs from Level Cross to Asheboro, Interstate 73/74 from south of Asheboro to the end of the current US 220 freeway near Emery, and finally 'Future Interstate 73/74 Corridor' from Emery to the US 74 freeway in Rockingham.
