The 3rd Armored Division —nicknamed the Spearhead— was an armored division of the United States Army.
The Division was first activated in 1941, and was a key participant in the European Theatre of World War II, the division was stationed in Germany for much of the Cold War, and participated in the Persian Gulf War.
The Third Armored Division was organized as a "heavy" Armored Division, as was its counterpart, the Second Armored Division aka "Hell on Wheels".

This Western Task Force consisted of the US 2nd Armored Division, the US 3rd Infantry Division and US 9th Infantry Divisions - 35,000 troops in all.
The Eastern Task force, aimed at Algiers, was commanded by Lieutenant-General Kenneth Anderson and consisted of the British 78th Infantry Division and the US 34th Infantry Divisions - 20,000 troops.
The US 1st Ranger Battalion landed east of Oran, and quickly captured the shore battery at Arzew.

 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment
In October 1942, while the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions were staging for their baptism of fire in North Africa, the 37th Armored and the remainder of the 4th Armored Division moved to Tennessee for maneuvers.
The Infantry divisions on both sides of the 4th Armored attacked and "pinched out" the division, whereupon this "left jab" was followed up by the "right cross" in which the 4th Armored attacked through the Infantry lines and began to race for the neck of the Brittany peninsula.
On the 16th of August 1991 the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division was redesignated as the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, and the 2nd Battalion, 37th Armor became a member of the largest Division in the U.S. Army; the 3rd Infantry Division.

VII Corps was the southernmost corps of the 3rd Army, 4th Armored Division was on the VII Corps southern flank, and the 37th Tank Battalion was protecting the southern flank of the division.
On 7 March 1945 the US 1st Army thrust north from Cologne, pinning what was left of the German 7th army between it and the 4th Armored Division.
It was assigned to the 4th Armored Division on 25 February 1953 and then activated on 15 June 1954 with the rest of the division at Fort Hood, Texas.

Under the 10 division redesign from the Secretary of the Army, the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood cased its division colors and was reflagged as the 4th Infantry Division in December 1995.
The division sent brigades to participate in exercises in Germany from 1973 through 1979, and in 1987 the division was engaged in the largest deployment to Europe since World War II as a part of the Third Corps exercise "Reforger 87" to demonstrate the ability to deploy and fight in support of NATO.
In December 1995 the the 2nd Armored Division was again redesignated as the Fourth Infantry Division (mechanized), stationed in Colorado.
