The 34th Infantry Division was reorganized and redesigned as a active National Guard division on 10 February 1991, replacing the 47th Infantry (Viking) Division.
The remaining 34th Infantry Division headquarters was converted to a Command and Control Headquarters, similar to the 35th Infantry Division.

 82nd US Airborne
In January 1944, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, which was temporarily detached from the Division to fight at Anzio, earned the nickname "Devils in Baggy Pants." The nickname was taken from an entry made in a German officer's diary.
The division was moved up to the front by motor transport and reinforced by the 34th Infantry Division on 12 July 1943.
The Division attacked the West Wall on 2 February, where it was relieved two days later, and then drove to the Roer River near Bergstein in an attack from 7 Ferbuary to 20 February.

 Wendell Fountain in WW2
The U.S. Armies objective of this landing was to capture Naples, Italy and involved a landing at Salerno, Italy.
However, the defense of the invasion at Salerno was so intense at one point that the general in charge, General Mark Clark, had to arm as infantry two artillery battalions, the regimental band, all the HQ orderlies, and the cooks in order to avoid getting surrounded by the Germans at the Battle of Ponte Bruciato.
Infantry Division, is called up to the front lines to stop the German attack.

The U.S. 45th Infantry Division and Combat Command A (CCA), a regimental-size unit of the U.S. 1st Armored Division, were directed to land as reinforcements once the beachhead was established.
Even though the 7th and 15th Infantry regiments and the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion often were hard pressed and suffered heavy losses between 1 and 4 March at the hands of the 715th and the 16th SS Panzer Grenadier Divisions, all three units held their positions and beat back successive enemy assaults.
The 45th Division was to move beyond Carano on the left as far as the Campoleone-Cisterna railroad, while the 36th Infantry Division exploited the expected breakthrough.

 German Organizations
During the Po Valley Campaign, the 305th Division defended positions east of Bolgona and on April 20, 1945, the division was caught in a pincher.
The division took part in defensive in the Pfalz region to the Rhine River where it was destroyed in April of 1945.
General Baade lead this division during the North African campaign and it was one of the outstanding divisions of the Africa Korps.

Unlike the US divisions, the British Reigment was identified only by its name-- not a number-- and the battalions of a regiment did not serve in the same division.
Canadian Division was the first Canadian unit to be sent to Italy and was the first major deployment of Canadian troops in combat.
It was primarily consisted of the 3rd Carpthian Rifle Brigade of the 3rd Carpthian Division and the 4th Wolyn Infantry Brigade of the 5th Frontier Infantry Division.

Between the 56 Division and the beaches of VI Corps to the south lay a gap of more than 10 miles which must be closed without delay as the two corps moved inland.
At first it consisted only of the 36th Division; then vessels for one regimental combat team of the 45th Division were made available, and finally it proved possible to include nearly two regimental combat teams of the 45th in the D Day convoy.
The Hermann Goering Division was on the plains of Naples, and the 15th Panzer Grenadier Division (armored infantry) was probably northwest of this force, in the general neighborhood of Gaeta.

The 100th Infantry Battalion (Nisei)(Separate), which stood in for the 2nd Battalion, 133rd Infantry, from September 1943 through May 1944, and the 442nd Infantry Regiment (Nisei) which was attached to our Division from June 1944 through August 1944, have an especially honored place in our memories and history.
The 1st Ranger Battalion, though not a part of the 34th Inf Div, was activated in 1942 with 80% of its personnel coming from this Division.

 34th Infantry Regiment - 24th Infantry Division - US Army - Korean War Project
Comments: I was wounded by a landmine in August of 1950 after the remains of the 34th was transferred to the 19th Inf Rgt.
This unit was primarily assigned to the 24th Infantry Division during WW II, but was also assigned at times to the 41st and 38th Infantry Divisions during the conflict.
My grandfather was an E-7, SFC, and was assigned to L Company, 34th Infantry and became missing in action while defending Taejon, Korea during an attack by enemy tanks and infantrymen on 20 July 1950.

Apparently Winifred was a Medic in the 21st Infantry or at least he had a Medical MOS.
Was a part of Company C, 1st battalion, 21st infantry regiment, 24th infantry division.
