The 3d Infantry Division (Mechanized) —nicknamed the Rock of the Marne— is a United States Army infantry division based at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
During the Korean War, the Division, was known as the "Fire Brigade" for its rapid response to crisis.
As part of the Army's reduction to a ten-division force, the 24th Infantry Division was inactivated on 15 February 1996, and reflagged to become the 3rd Infantry Division.

 3rd Armored Division
The 3rd Armored Division was reduced to zero strength (but not inactivated) on 15 February 1992 and removed from the force structure.
Victory Corps also sent its 3rd Armored Division and some battalions from the 8th Infantry Division along with VII Corps, because the Spearhead Division was well advanced in its modernization process and was largely equipped with Bradley Fighting Vehicles.
When the Battle of the Bulge broke, the Division was shifted to Houffalize, Belgium, where it severed a vital highway leading to St. Vith, and in January participated in the reduction of the German salient west of Houffalize.

 HQ ARRC - 1st (US) ARMOURED DIVISION
The distinctive insignia of the 1st Armoured Division is a combination of the triangular crest of the World War I Tank Corps and of the round shoulder patch of the 7th Cavalry Brigade.
In this sense, all armoured divisions carried with them the heritage of the 7th Cavalry Brigade, the ancestor to the 1st Armoured Division.
On Jan. 17, 1992, the 8th Infantry Division (Mechanised) was redesignated as the 1st Armoured Division and Old Ironsides made its new home in the wine region of Rhineland-Pfalz, with the division headquarters moving to Rose Barracks in historic Bad Kreuznach.

As you know, the 20,000 troops or so of the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division were one of the units that were at the point of the spear during combat operations.
Now, the other airframe that we have with us is the Blackhawk, and that traditionally has done great service here, and probably gets the most use on a day-to-day basis here moving troops and equipment around the city, and back and forth from Kuwait.
So in the C2V we had the friendly force tracker system, which enabled us to see all of our leadership on the battlefield, plus we could see where the MEF was and the 101st, and any element in the theater that had their systems on.

The 3rd Armored Division was one of the two "heavy" armored divisions in the US Army.
Being one of "heavy" armored divisions, meant that they were under an old table of organization and, possessed three regiments instead of two, 232 Medium tanks instead of the 168 allotted a light armored division, and with attached units numbered over 16,000 men, instead of the normal 12,000, now found in the lighter armored divisions.

"...U.S. Army unit identification protocol stipulated, and still does, that Armies (Third US Army, Fifth US Army, etc.) are written English numerals spelled out in the plain...To this day, the World War II veterans of the Division still seeth with anger about being confused with Patton's Third Army...and for good reason.
They created the confusion with the incorrect division identification not only on their histories but in their association name as well.

 Fact Sheet of the 3rd Armored Division
The Division’s trek across Europe started in Normandy on 28 Jun 1944, as it began to lead the First US Army out of that province and across France.
Ordered to help close the Falaise-Argentan pocket which contained the German Seventh Army, the Division finished the job near Putanges by 18 Aug. Six days later the outfit had sped through Courville and Chartres and was located at the banks of the Seine.
The 3rd was temporarily halted during the Von Runstedt counteroffensive in the Ardennes but it jumped into the vital battle at Houffalize, Belgium, and severed an important highway leading to St Vith.

The Kompanie Kommander, Hauptman Wolfgang Koltermann, with five tanks of the 3rd Zug (platoon) was hidden in the woods in the high ground on the north side of the road defending the route to Kirchborchen and Hamborn Schloss.
To date, in spite of repeated requests, the 507th survivors have refused to identify the specific 3rd Kompanie platoon leaders; although the name and tank number of every tank commander in each of the 507th Kompanies were recorded during this encounter on 30 March 1945 defending Paderborn.
The Germans (unsubstantiated) claim is that 100 young Waffen--SS prisoners were shot and killed by the US 3rd Armored Division the next day in retaliation for General Rose's death.

 U.S. 3rd Division WWII Reenacting
During World War One, the Division earned the nickname "The Rock of the Marne" for it's outstanding performance in one of the pivotal campaigns of the war.
After the fall of Rome four months later, the Division was withdrawn from Italy, and landed in Southern France to create the "hammer" to the "anvil" of the armies that landed in Normandy.
The "Rock" fought it's way into Germany, and at the end of the War was one of the few American Divisions to have been in combat continuously from the start to the end of the American involvement, and still end up in Germany at the finish.

At the height of the cold war the 3rd Armored had the mission of the mobile defense of the Fulda Gap, a historic invasion route.
Being greatly outnumbered, the division had to delay a Soviet incursion through Fulda until manpower was airlifted from the States to prepositioned equipment in rear areas.
