The Sixth Fleet is a US Navy operational unit, headquartered on the command ship Mount Whitney (LCC-20) with its homeport in Gaeta, Italy and operating in the Mediterranean Sea.
The cruiser USS Dayton relieved the tender USS Shenandoah as flagship and began operating with the fleet.
The small fleet maintained in the Mediterranean by U.S. Naval Forces, Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean was known as Naval Forces Mediterranean and had as its flagship, a destroyer tender, anchored at Naples, Italy.

Because 6th Fleet Maintenance oversees the Ship Repair Unit in Bahrain, they continued to track and service ships after they exited the European theater, into 5th Fleet’s area of responsibility, including the Arabian Gulf and Red Sea.
The 6th Fleet Maintenance shop was manned 24 hours a day, with a watchstander always checking message traffic on a computer, looking for casualty reports, or “casreps.” Once they received a casrep within their area of responsibility, 6th Fleet Maintenance decided who needed to be contacted to provide the ship with necessary repairs.
The war also limited 6th Fleet Maintenance Sailors from visiting ships to better understand their maintenance needs, as was commonly done in the past.

 USS Semmes DDG-18 History
From February to July 1966, the guided missile destroyer conducted her second tour with the 6th Fleet and, on her return to the United States, changed her home port from Charleston to Norfolk, effective 1 August in anticipation of her first major overhaul at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
In late September, she again crossed the Atlantic for a seven-month deployment with the 6th Fleet; and, on 10 February 1970, while moored at Naples, she was struck by the Greek freighter, SS Mautrie.
During 1971, her schedule remained basically the same, but her annual tour with the 6th Fleet, 16 July to 11 October, was followed by visits to the Netherlands and to Denmark for binational and NATO operations.

Early 1963 was spent in Boston for overhaul and by June she had returned to the Mediterranean and 6th Fleet operations.

The Gaeta, Italy-based 6th Fleet staff and USS La Salle departed Nov. 1 for a monthlong deployment to the Black Sea.
Cate Mueller, 6th Fleet public affairs officer, said that the officer was seriously injured and will be flown to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany once stabilized.
