The U.S. 2nd Marine Division is a division of the United States Marine Corps, which forms the ground-force component of the II Marine Expeditionary Force.
The 2nd and 8th Marines (reinforced by other units of the 2nd Marine Division) were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (US) while attached to the 1st Marine Division from 7 August and 4 November 1942, respectively, for the Guadalcanal operation.
It was 241 Marines and Sailors of the Division that died during the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing.

On October 23, 1983, a Marine barracks in Lebanon was bombed, causing the highest peacetime losses to the Corps in its history (220 Marines of the 24th MAU were killed) and leading to the American withdrawal from Lebanon.
As of October 2005, Marine Generals Peter Pace (Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) and James L. Jones (Commander of the United States European Command; NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Europe; and a former commandant of the Marine Corps) are senior in time and grade to the commandant.
Marines and those familiar with Marine Corps tradition will often object to the use of the term "ex-Marine," Marines are inculcated with the Marine ethos "Once a Marine, always a Marine." Former Marine refers to an individual that completed their service and has received an honorable or general discharge from the service.

Vosbein, 30, of Metairie, La., died on Aug. 29, in Sadr Al Yusifiyah, Iraq, of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol during combat operations.
All four Marines were assigned to the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Two died in Baghdad, Iraq, on May 11, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat patrol operations.

It was formed on Guadalcanal in the Fall of 1944, using as a base, the 4th Marine Regiment and the 22nd Marine regiment, who were operating as the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade and had just secured GUAM and returned to Guadalcanal.
By adding several thousand, new marines just out of line camp at Camp Lejeune N.C. (of which I was one) another Regiment was formed, The 29th.
The war ended in August and the 6th Marine Division, with the exception of the 4th Regiment who was sent to Tokyo, Was sent to Tsingtao, China to accept the surrender of the Japanese forces in that area, after the surrender in Tokyo, the 4th Regiment joined us in China.
